Chapter 825:
“I can’t agree with that.” He glanced at me, his eyes gentle but unwavering. “Lianne, I won’t let you give up your convictions for me or for the pack. You’ve been trying to get justice for your late father for months now. I fell in love with you because you’re passionate and because you stand by your principles. I never want to become the chain that holds you back. I only want you to stay free and always follow your heart.”
His words made my nose sting with emotion.
Ethan treasured my beliefs even more than I did. He’d rather put himself in an impossible position than let me sacrifice what mattered most or endure even the slightest injustice.
After we picked up the kids, the peaceful silence inside the car disappeared, replaced by nonstop chatter and laughter.
“Mommy! Look!” Ruby exclaimed excitedly, pulling a pink heart-shaped letter from her backpack, her eyes shining. “A boy from the class next door gave me a love letter!”

Before I could even respond, Silas let out a dismissive snort. “That’s so childish. Ruby, you’re way too young for that. Dating this early is pointless and only distracts you.”
I couldn’t stop myself from laughing and turned to Ethan for backup.
To my surprise, Ethan looked completely unfazed. Meeting Ruby’s eyes through the rearview mirror, he asked softly, “Ruby, do you like him?”
“He runs really fast, and he always shares his chocolates with me!” Ruby answered after tilting her head in thought.
“Then I’m glad,” Ethan replied, a gentle smile curving his lips. “Your happiness is the only thing that counts.”
Watching the tenderness in his eyes, remembering the overwhelming devotion he’d always shown me, I felt the last trace of uneasiness inside my heart quietly disappear.
The car rolled into the villa’s driveway, and just as the engine shut off, Ethan’s phone buzzed insistently once again.
It was already the fifth call during the drive, yet he simply stared ahead without expression, letting the ringtone fill the silence inside the car.
“You should answer it,” I said gently, turning toward him. “What if it’s something important from the company? I don’t want spending time with us to interfere with your work.”
When he still didn’t react, I unfastened my seatbelt and reached for the door handle. “If you don’t want me to hear it, I’ll take the kids inside first so you can answer in private.”
“You don’t have to.” At last, he reached over and declined the call, his voice weighed down by restrained frustration. “I just don’t want to talk to them.”
Once we were home, I sent Ruby and Silas upstairs to finish their homework.
The moment we were alone in the living room, an oppressive silence settled between us.
Ethan stood before the window with his back to me. His broad figure looked strangely lonely. He tried to hide whatever he was feeling, but the faint tremble in his hands gave him away.
I padded over quietly, winding my arms around his waist from behind and pressing my cheek against the solid warmth of his back. “Ethan,” I murmured, “what’s wrong? You can’t even meet my eyes. Are you worried I’ll be angry with you?”
Lianne’s POV
Ethan stood frozen for a heartbeat. Then, seeing the determination in my eyes, he slowly turned around and held out the phone still vibrating in his hand.
The caller ID read Philip.
