Chapter 885:
I gave a soft laugh and tried to sound cheerful. “I’ve experienced the devastating pain of losing family too, so I understand what he’s going through. Tracy, he really isn’t doing this on purpose. He just needs some time.”
Tracy let out a sigh. “You’re far too forgiving when it comes to him.”
“He’s worth it,” I said.
After the call ended, my heavy heart eased considerably.

I kept reminding myself to be patient and understanding. Ethan and I simply had to make it through this difficult period together.
As night settled in, Ethan’s account finally went offline.
I thought he would be home soon.
Ruby and Silas returned from school, both eagerly waiting for their father to come home.
Ruby stood by the window with her eyes fixed on the front door. Under her breath, she murmured, “Why isn’t Daddy home yet?”
Silas sat quietly on the couch, playing with his building blocks, but every so often, his eyes wandered toward the door.
Seeing their anticipation tugged at my heart.
Suddenly, Silas put down his blocks and looked up at me. In a soft voice, he asked, “Mommy, did you and Daddy have a fight?”
My heart sank. I immediately crouched beside him and gently stroked his hair. “No, sweetheart. Why would you think that?”
Silas lowered his gaze, his voice becoming even softer. “I heard Daddy being mean to you on the phone… I don’t want you and Daddy to split up.”
A wave of guilt washed over me.
Ever since they were born, they had never experienced a father’s love.
Now that they had finally reunited with Ethan and accepted him, my history with Rola had caused such a sudden change in his attitude.
Our children were completely innocent, and I felt I owed them so much. I pulled Silas tightly against me and said in a gentle but firm voice, “We won’t. We’re a family, and we’ll always stay together.”
Silas rested against me and gave a small nod.
But we continued waiting, and Ethan still didn’t come home.
When the clock moved past nine, Ruby’s eyelids began to grow heavy. Even so, she stubbornly fought to keep herself awake. Seeing how exhausted the children were, I finally picked up my phone and called Ethan. The first call rang for a long time, but he never answered.
I took a deep breath and called again.
This time, he picked up after a few rings. His voice came through the phone cold and distant, with clear impatience. “What is it?”
I tightened my grip on the phone and tried to keep my voice calm. “Ruby and Silas are still waiting for you. When will you be back?”
“I’m tied up with work. I’ll be back late,” he answered curtly.
“Okay, then…”
Before I could finish speaking, the call ended.
I stayed silent, the dial tone lingering in my ear. Deep down, I knew he wasn’t telling me the truth.
His account had been offline for quite some time, which meant he hadn’t been at the company at all. A faint sense of unease began creeping into my heart.
However, I forced myself to push every suspicion aside.
