Chapter 797:
“I don’t believe it was her.” Sensing the anger building inside me, Lianne hurried to defend Melisa. “She’s a genuinely good person. She’d never deliberately hurt me. She even told me she isn’t interested in becoming your mate. She doesn’t have feelings for you.”
I met her trusting gaze, but my own thoughts stayed perfectly clear.
A good person? When the future of an entire family hung in the balance, morality was often the first thing people abandoned.
I’d already learned that Melisa’s household had fallen into serious financial trouble. Around that same time, Philip, that calculating old schemer, had conveniently offered his assistance. Someone like him never gave without expecting something in return.
Melisa herself might reject the idea of becoming my mate, but that didn’t mean her relatives would allow her to refuse. She never got to decide her own future.
“I understand.” I brushed a kiss against Lianne’s forehead, trying to calm her. “I’ll only ask her a few questions. I won’t mistreat her.”
Only after the medication finally pulled Lianne back into a deep sleep did I rise from the bed, throwing the blanket aside as an oppressive silence settled over me.
Stepping into the living room, I dialed Melisa’s number. The call never connected. Instead, an automated message informed me her phone had been switched off.
“Noah.” My voice turned sharp as I dialed his number. “Find Melisa immediately.”
Barely ten minutes passed before my phone rang again. “Alpha, we’ve located her,” Noah reported. “She’s already on a flight headed this way. Arrival is scheduled in about an hour.”
Standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows, I watched the storm clouds rolling across the sky, my eyes colder than the weather outside.

Melisa was coming here herself?
“Take a team to the airport,” I ordered without emotion. “Bring her directly to my warehouse. I want answers in person about that bottle of water.”
If she truly had poisoned Lianne… she would discover exactly what it meant to provoke me.
“Meet the aircraft on the runway,” I continued coldly. “The second Melisa steps off the plane, take her into custody. Seize every device she has, and make sure nobody can reach her. She isn’t allowed to speak to anyone until I get there.”
After ending the call, I tightened my fists until my nails dug painfully into my palms.
I’d believed Melisa was a good person. I’d even considered entrusting Lianne’s long-term treatment to her.
But if that bottle had truly been laced with poison, then every smile she’d worn and every ounce of compassion she’d displayed had merely concealed deadly intentions.
Whoever dared lay a hand on Lianne would answer for it, even if I had to reduce the entire Thorn Pack to ashes.
When I returned to the bedroom, Lianne’s phone lit up again. The screen showed one missed call after another from Tracy.
Not wanting to frighten her by answering with bad news right away, I chose another route and called Jeremy instead.
“Ethan?” Jeremy sounded puzzled. Behind him, I could make out Tracy repeatedly asking worried questions. “Why are you calling from Lianne’s phone?”
“Was Tracy looking for Lianne?” I asked without wasting time.
