Chapter 224:
I buried myself in wrapping up the final contracts for the Sparkle series, hoping the weight of work would numb everything stirring inside me.
Just then, my phone screen suddenly lit up with a breaking news alert.
My fingers stilled, and almost without thinking, I tapped the link.
It was a grainy clip, clearly recorded by a passerby.
In the footage, rain poured relentlessly, sirens wailing sharply through the downpour. Paramedics rushed forward, pushing a stretcher toward the waiting ambulance.
I held my breath and dragged the progress bar to the fifty-seven-second mark.
The frame shook violently, and beneath a flickering streetlight, a side profile flashed by.
Though indistinct, that silhouette was unmistakable. It was Ethan.
The camera then lingered on the injured person lying on the stretcher. It was a woman dressed in a black coat, her long hair drenched, clinging messily to her face. My chest tightened. That coat was the one Ethan had been wearing when he left.
It was Ivy. He had given her his coat.
My hands began to shake before I even realized it. Where was Ethan now? Had he been hurt as well? He had looked so disheveled in the footage. What had actually happened?

Half an hour later, Noah knocked on my door, his expression slightly tense. “Lianne, Alpha wants to see you in his office.”
An uneasy feeling settled over me.
Without asking anything further, I hurried upstairs to Ethan’s office.
The moment I pushed the door open, I froze.
A faint metallic scent of blood lingered in the air.
Ethan was slumped against the leather couch, his upper body bare. His usually pristine shirt had been discarded carelessly on the floor, soaked with a striking spread of blood.
His hand pressed tightly against his left shoulder, crimson seeping through his fingers.
“Ethan…” I called out, rushing toward him before I could stop myself. “What happened? How did you end up injured like this?”
Ethan lifted his head, his face pale, beads of cold sweat clinging to his forehead.
He looked at me, something fragile flickering in his eyes.
“Someone spread silver powder,” he said through clenched teeth, his voice rough. “I breathed some in, and the wound won’t heal on its own.”
Silver was the most lethal weakness for a werewolf.
Once it seeped into the bloodstream, it dulled an Alpha’s natural ability to heal, turning even the smallest injury into something that festered and refused to close. I studied the wound on his shoulder, deep enough to reveal bone. The edges had already darkened into an unnatural, scorched black. That was the unmistakable sign of silver poisoning.
“Why didn’t you go to the hospital?” I asked urgently, reaching out instinctively before stopping myself at the last second.
“There were too many people there. If the reporters caught even a glimpse, the stock would plummet tomorrow.” A faint, self-derisive smile touched his lips as he looked at me. “And besides… Ivy was in shock. I had the doctor tend to her first.”
Ivy again.
The concern I had felt moments ago cooled into indifference.
