Chapter 147:
But that was only the effect of the mate bond. It was something forced on me by the Moon Goddess, carved into instinct. It was not love.
“No, I don’t love her.” I rejected it at once, my voice rigid, as though I were trying to persuade myself. “This is duty. Even if we separate someday, I’ll still do what I’m supposed to and keep her safe. I won’t let anyone hurt her.”
I warned Liam not to overstep again, then severed the mind link.
At that moment, Noah sent me a video. “Sir, the set’s surveillance system was down at the time. This footage was caught by a behind-the-scenes cameraman who happened to be in the corner.”
That conveniently failed surveillance erased the last trace of doubt in my mind.

When I finished watching the video, an empty, stabbing ache spread through my chest. I went straight to the office of Ivy’s attending doctor and kicked the door open.
“Tell me the truth about Ivy’s real condition,” I said without preamble.
The doctor tried to dodge the question at first, but under my pressure, he finally cracked. “She only had two minor blisters on her leg. With a she-wolf’s healing ability, they were nearly gone by the time she got here. She was never unconscious. The overstated injuries and the fake medical records, she was the one who asked for all of it.”
The instant I learned the truth, anger and bitterness rose together inside me.
For the sake of those two blisters, I had humiliated Lianne and even left her behind.
By the time I stepped back into the hospital room, Ivy was already resting against the raised bed. The instant her eyes landed on me, she quickly arranged her face into a look of suffering. “Ethan, you’re finally here. My whole body hurts. Will you stay with me?”
“Stop this.” My reply was flat as I flung the forged report onto her covers. “Two blisters were enough to keep you unconscious all night? Ivy, when did you become this skilled at faking things?”
Her expression locked in place, and the color vanished from her face at once.
Her lips trembled open, and tears immediately spilled down as she reached for my hand. “Ethan, listen to me. I only did it because I was scared. I was scared you’d start caring about Lianne, scared you’d leave me. That’s why I did this.”
Watching her cry filled me with a fierce irritation unlike anything I had ever felt before.
Those tears that once used to move me now looked hollow and false.
I took out the birthday present I had chosen for her and set it beside the bed.
“Even if none of this had happened, I still would have gone to see you last night. But Ivy, you went too far this time.” I stared at her, my eyes hard. “You may be better off somewhere else. I’ll have people arrange for you to go overseas. The medical treatment there is better.”
