Chapter 724:
My heart was like a frozen lake without a single ripple, so silent and cold that nothing could disturb it.
“If he finds another mate, then I’ll sincerely wish them happiness.” I looked up at her, my expression calm but unwavering. “Tracy, I kept pushing him away. He was never supposed to wait for me forever. If someone else can give him the peaceful, joyful life I never could, then I can only wish him well.”
Tears shimmered in Tracy’s eyes. She clasped my hands tightly and whispered, “I just feel like you’ve suffered far more than anyone ever should.”
I managed a small smile, pretending I was stronger than I felt. “I’ll be alright. Don’t worry about me. Right now, the most important thing is taking care of yourself and the baby.”
Tracy gave a small nod. After taking a sip of her milk, she asked in a low voice, “So how’s the case coming along?”
“It’ll be in court soon,” I replied truthfully, absentmindedly brushing my fingertips across the cool side of my cup. “Rola managed to stay out of pretrial detention by using her connections, but the court has already issued the official paperwork. Even if she doesn’t appear, the trial can still move forward without her, and it won’t change the final judgment. This time, she won’t get away.”
Tracy let out a long sigh, her face filled with a mix of emotions. “Sometimes I can’t stop thinking, if Rola had never done all those terrible things, you and Ethan could have been the happiest couple alive. Lianne, I’ve known Ethan for a long time. He’s reliable, responsible, and protects the people he loves with everything he has. He’s the only man I can imagine spending the rest of his life taking care of you.”
I shook my head slightly with a bitter smile. “Tracy, it’s not practical to dwell on what could have been. The moment I learned the truth about my father’s death, I didn’t have a choice.”
I fell silent, my gaze lingering on the endless darkness beyond the window. My voice was so composed I almost sounded cruel. “Getting justice for my father’s death is the one thing I must do in this life. No matter how much I love Ethan, those feelings will always come second to that. Even if walking away from him breaks me, I have to fulfill my duty as my father’s daughter before I can be Ethan’s mate.”
Tracy looked like she wanted to ask what I planned to do once the trial was over, but I spoke before she had the chance.

“When it’s all over, if Ethan has already found another mate, then I’ll leave. I’ll go somewhere far away and sincerely hope he lives a happy life,” I said, taking a deep breath. “But if he’s still alone, I’ll return to him. It won’t matter if he hates me, blames me, or refuses to see me. I deserve to experience the same pain he endured, chasing after him again and again even if he rejects me.”
