Chapter 618:
“He expects me to accept her. He keeps saying she’s his responsibility. Fine. But who’s supposed to care about what this is doing to me?” Tracy muttered with a humorless laugh.
At last, everything made sense. They had been planning their engagement one moment and falling apart the next.
Even if Jeremy never intended to lie, keeping something this enormous hidden had already shattered the foundation between them.
The car slowed at an intersection while the traffic light glowed red.
Without warning, Tracy grabbed my hand hard enough to hurt.
“There’s something I need your help with. You can’t tell anyone. Not Jeremy. Especially not Ethan,” she whispered urgently.
The fear in her eyes made my stomach tighten instantly. A terrible possibility surfaced in my mind before I could stop it.
I blurted out, “Tracy… are you pregnant?”
The atmosphere inside the car turned painfully still.

Sadness flashed across her pale face. A moment later, exhaustion replaced it.
She never denied it. Instead, she leaned back against the seat as though the weight of everything had finally crushed her.
I stared at her flat stomach in disbelief.
There was a child growing inside her. Jeremy’s child. A baby that should have been welcomed with happiness instead of heartbreak.
I couldn’t find a single thing to say.
“I don’t want this child. I already scheduled the procedure. Three days from now,” she said after a long pause, speaking with chilling calmness. “I only need you there with me because I don’t trust anyone else.”
She had considered everything, and she had made her choice.
Deep down, she knew she couldn’t handle raising a child alone. At the same time, she couldn’t bring herself to embrace Jeremy’s daughter either. The future waiting for her felt too uncertain, too heavy to gamble everything on becoming someone’s stepmother.
To her, ending things immediately was kinder than dragging out a relationship that would only poison them both later.
“I’ll be there,” I answered instantly.
I refused to let my best friend walk into that operating room by herself.
“Do your parents know you’re pregnant?” I asked quietly.
Panic crossed her face at once. “Absolutely not. If they hear about this, they’ll march straight to Jeremy’s place demanding answers. Then Jeremy will find out too. And you know him. He’ll do everything possible to stop me. He’d probably force me to keep the baby if he had to. My entire life would be trapped after that.”
Emotion tightened painfully in my chest as I looked at her.
That was always Tracy’s nature. Practical. Rational. Capable of making brutal choices once she weighed every consequence.
Compared to her, I had always been weak where love was concerned, endlessly torn between resentment and longing.
When I noticed her hands trembling slightly, I spoke up gently. “Tracy… Jeremy deserves to know. He never chose for his ex to hide his daughter from him. He was deceived too. Wouldn’t hiding this from him make things even crueler?”
