Chapter 812:
Rising slightly on my toes, I brushed my lips softly against his cool mouth, almost like placing a quiet mark of possession upon him.
Something deeper flickered across his eyes before he claimed my lips again. His kiss was intense yet carefully restrained, and he finally let me go only after I was left breathless.
During the days that followed, my health steadily improved.
The constant feeling of unease that had lingered like a shadow gradually disappeared, though sleepless nights continued to haunt me.
One night, unable to rest, I draped a coat around my shoulders and made my way to the study.
Ethan sat behind the wide desk, reviewing a mountain of paperwork. The golden glow from the lamp gently outlined the sharp angles of his handsome face.

“Ethan, there’s something I’d like to discuss.” I came up behind him and rested my hands lightly on his shoulders. “I’m feeling much stronger now. I think I can continue recovering on my own without relying on medicine anymore. So… maybe we don’t need to ask Melisa to keep coming over for my treatments.”
Lianne’s POV
The pen halted in Ethan’s hand. His shoulders locked, as though someone had pulled an invisible string.
He slowly looked over at me, his eyes suddenly hard. “Did Melisa reach out to you on her own?”
I gave a small shake of my head. “No. The last time I contacted her was when I apologized for you, but she never answered.”
“I’ll deal with it myself. You don’t have to concern yourself with any of this. And don’t message her anymore.” He faced me, slipped an arm around my waist, and lifted me onto his lap.
Something deep inside me refused to believe his explanation.
There had to be something unspoken connecting him and Melisa, and the lingering discomfort in my chest refused to disappear.
Looping my arms around his neck, I searched his face. “Are the elders putting pressure on you again? Are they using my condition as an excuse to push you into marrying Melisa?”
The faintest shiver passed through him. His expression stayed composed, but the brief flicker in his eyes exposed what he was trying to hide.
“Nothing like that.” His answer came without hesitation as his palm cradled the back of my head and drew me against his shoulder. “Stop thinking about it so much. Believe me.”
His response only convinced me there was something he refused to tell me.
Even so, I let the matter rest. My health was still unstable, and he was probably trying to shield me from whatever ugly situation was unfolding, afraid I would blame myself.
Silence settled over the study. The only sound came from the steady ticking of the clock on the wall.
“Ethan… will you ever leave me?” I finally whispered, gathering every ounce of courage.
I possessed nothing. No influential family, no remarkable talent, not even a body that could be called healthy.
