Chapter 68:
“What’s wrong with me?” I let out a sharp, bitter laugh as tears gathered in my eyes. “Fine. Then answer me this. Three years ago, when you marked me… wasn’t that right after you had that huge fight with Ivy overseas? She wanted to break up with you, didn’t she? And you picked me just because I was there. You used me to get back at her and to fill the space she left behind. Isn’t that the truth?”
Ethan’s face lost all color. Panic flickered across his eyes.
That was enough for me. I didn’t need to hear anything else. Everything Ivy said back in the restroom had been right.
“So I really was just a stand-in.” I gave a quiet, mocking shake of my head. “And I actually believed that everything I did for you meant something.”

“It’s not what you think…” he tried to explain, but his voice came out weak.
“And what about every July?” I cut in, my tone turning sharp. “Every single year, you’d come up with some excuse about a business trip and disappear for at least two weeks. Where did you really go? You went to see her, didn’t you?”
Ethan stayed silent. His fists clenched so tightly that the veins on the back of his hands stood out.
“What’s wrong? Can’t say it out loud? Or are you finally realizing how disgusting it is?” I looked at him, but all I felt was emptiness settling in.
Tears kept falling, and I couldn’t stop them.
“If you cared about her that much, if you never moved on all these years, then why didn’t you just wait for her? Why did you drag me into this and treat me like I was nothing?”
My whole body trembled as I lost control, the tears refusing to stop.
The car went completely silent.
Time stretched on, long enough for me to think he wouldn’t say anything at all. Then, in a low voice, he finally spoke. “I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” I lifted my head and looked straight at him, a cold edge in my voice. “That’s all you ever say, isn’t it? Do you think saying sorry can give me back those years?”
I brushed the tears off my face and drew in a steady breath, forcing myself to calm down.
“So how are you planning to make it right? Money? Status? Shares?” I pulled out the black card he had given me and threw it at him. “I don’t want any of it. You don’t have what I actually need.”
The card struck his chest and slipped down between the seats without a sound.
“The mate bond must be ended by next Monday,” I said as I held his gaze. My eyes stayed firm, leaving no room for doubt.
Ethan’s POV:
Late that night, I sat alone in the study.
The Rejection lay open on the desk in front of me. I had already smoothed out its creases, but my thoughts refused to settle.
Lianne’s face kept appearing in my mind. I could still see her looking at me with tears in her eyes. The calm in her gaze was gone, replaced by something close to breaking.
My throat felt tight. Without thinking, I rubbed my thumb against the black card in my hand.
