Chapter 654:
Even though I stayed calm on purpose, keeping my eyes forward and trying to walk past Zoe without acknowledging her, my silence only made her angrier.
“Stop!” Her cold voice cut through the hallway.
Her heels clicked sharply as she marched over and stepped directly into my path. “Ms. Riley, didn’t you hear me?”
I halted and met her eyes.
The cool air in the corridor sent a faint chill across my skin. I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. “If you have something to say, say it. I don’t have time for petty games.”
Zoe folded her arms across her chest, looking at me with jealousy and hostility.

She let out a scornful laugh, then began to hurl one accusation after another. “Lianne, stop acting like you’re so innocent. Going after Alex when he’s married? You’ve been playing dirty little tricks ever since your days in Brinewick, haven’t you? I always knew exactly what kind of woman you were. You can’t live without throwing yourself at men.”
Every insult that left her mouth was piercing, vicious, and dripping with spite.
I frowned and answered in a cool, detached tone, “If you’re going to make baseless accusations, save them for HR. Now move.”
But my attempt to defuse the situation only fueled her arrogance.
She stepped even closer, lowering her voice as she kept slandering me. “What? Did I strike a nerve? Even Alex isn’t safe from you. You really have no shame…”
The crisp sound of my slap rang through the quiet hallway, and nearby colleagues stopped and turned toward us.
I lowered my hand, which still stung from the impact, and looked straight into Zoe’s stunned eyes with unwavering resolve.
The slap was clean and strong. I hadn’t even hesitated for a second.
For a moment, Zoe could only stare at me in disbelief.
She pressed a hand against her red cheek, shock and rage written all over her face. Then she lunged at me, grabbing my arm with both hands as her nails dug painfully into my skin.
She immediately raised her voice, making sure everyone around could hear. “She slapped me! Everyone, look! The director is abusing her authority and bullying me! What gives someone who only got this position through connections the right to hit me?”
She was deliberately making a scene, trying to gather an audience so she could embarrass me in public.
I had always hated spectacles like this. With a sharp tug, I freed myself from her grip and fixed her with an icy stare. “If you think you’ve been wronged, call the police. I’ll cooperate with the investigation completely,” I said firmly.
Zoe pulled out her phone as if she were really about to make the call, her stubbornness driven entirely by resentment.
A few colleagues quickly stepped in, afraid the confrontation would escalate further. One of them had already run off to inform Alex about what was happening.
Soon, Zoe’s phone rang.
