Chapter 239:
A faint, restless ache rose quietly inside me.
I could still remember last night’s heated kiss, the way Ethan had held me close with one hand over my stomach, and the promise he made that I would be the only mate in his life. All of it lingered like a dangerous kind of sweetness, drawing me in.
I picked up my phone and called him, but he did not answer.
I sent him a message asking when he would be home, but no reply came.
“Maybe he’s tied up in a meeting,” I murmured, trying to calm myself down.

At that moment, a message popped up from Tracy, my best friend, whom I had not seen in months, asking me to meet her at the Pearl Club.
Thinking it would be better to go out and distract myself than stay home staring at my phone, I changed into a loose dress that hid both the curve of my stomach and the uneasiness weighing on me.
The private room at the club carried a light trace of essential oils, making the whole place feel soothing and warm.
Tracy looked at me in silence for a second before reaching out to lightly brush the fading bruise on my face, worry written all over her expression. “Lianne, you’ve suffered too much. That bastard Ethan! He failed to protect you.”
I smiled and held her hand, and even I was startled by the hint of softness in my own voice. “Tracy, things are finally getting better. And… we’re having a baby.”
“What?” Tracy’s eyes flew wide open in shock.
“I hid it from you for months,” I said softly. “When Ethan found out, he was so happy. He promised he’d let the past go, for the baby and for me.”
Tears spilled down Tracy’s face as she suddenly pulled me into a fierce hug. “Lianne, this is wonderful. You finally got through it. I knew life could not keep being that cruel to you.”
We held each other for a long while, exchanging heartfelt wishes and quietly talking through the flood of emotions.
Before leaving, Tracy gripped my arm with urgency. “Promise me you’ll go back soon. You’re pregnant. You can’t stay up late, and don’t make Ethan wait.”
She steered me toward the door, and at the corner of the hallway, we collided with Noah.
“Noah?” I exclaimed, startled by his flustered expression. “What are you doing here? Is Ethan around too?”
I figured I might as well surprise Ethan with a visit.
But Noah’s expression was off.
He suddenly stepped in front of the doorway, sweat dotting his forehead, voice shaking as he spoke. “Alpha is really busy right now. He’s in the middle of an international negotiation. You shouldn’t come in!”
“An international negotiation?” I narrowed my eyes, a heavy knot tightening in my chest. “In a club? And why are you sweating like this?”
“I’m not sweating. I just—”
“Step aside,” I said sharply, my voice cold and unyielding.
