Chapter 396:
Without delay, I contacted the Voss Group HR department, taking a steady breath to keep my tone controlled and professional. “Hello, this is Lianne Riley calling from Nexith Group. After careful consideration, I’ve decided that I will not be moving forward with my onboarding. I will submit my resignation soon, and I will forward the resignation letter to your email.”
“Resignation?” The person on the line didn’t sound the least bit surprised, only offering a mechanical note of regret. “Ms. Riley, it seems you haven’t reviewed the updated contract provisions. Per the supplemental agreement you signed upon your director promotion, resignation requires six months’ notice. During that period, you must remain in your role to complete the transition.”
“Six months?” I snapped, my voice rising in disbelief. “That is illegal under labor law!”
“It’s in accordance with the Executive Talent Contract you signed,” the voice on the other end replied, still unruffled. “If you choose to breach the agreement, you won’t just face a massive penalty, more importantly…”

The voice on the other end paused, then delivered the decisive blow. “Pursuant to the contractual terms, in your capacity as project lead for the Brinewick Resort, should you resign prior to the project’s completion, you shall be held fully liable for all projected losses incurred as a result of personnel changes.”
I went still, my hand shaking faintly as I held the phone.
The Brinewick Resort was Nexith Group’s biggest investment project of the year, with a total budget in the billions.
“What happens if I choose to break the contract?” I asked through clenched teeth.
“The penalty is roughly ten times your annual income, which may not concern you. But the losses tied to the Brinewick Resort project, conservatively speaking, could easily surpass one hundred million. Ms. Riley, are you certain you are ready for that?”
I ended the call in utter despair, letting the phone fall onto the bed.
I saw through Ethan with painful clarity. If he was willing to pour vast resources into acquiring Nexith Group, then he would certainly find ways to ensure the Brinewick Resort project suffered massive setbacks over the next six months.
He would not even need me to pay the penalty. He only needed this debt, one I could never clear, to keep me bound to him.
He had sealed off every possible escape.
He didn’t want my life or my money. He simply wanted control over me.
But I still couldn’t understand why he would go to such extremes.
Ethan’s POV
The air in the ICU corridor felt unbearably heavy.
Through the glass, I looked at Jeremy lying inside.
His breathing was weak. The silver poison behaved like a parasite clinging to bone, spreading through his veins and slowly eroding the werewolf’s natural healing ability.
Conventional medicine had reached its limit; it couldn’t save him. I had already sent Noah to contact the witch hidden in Nitesland. Only ancient spells and forbidden remedies could bring him back.
As I turned around, I noticed someone unexpected, though not entirely surprising.
Brian stood beside Jeremy’s father, quietly offering words of comfort. He must have found out about the accident after calling Jeremy regarding work.
When Jeremy’s father noticed me, he came over immediately, his already aged face now etched with exhaustion. “Ethan, you’re here.”
