Chapter 980:
Once everything on my schedule had been handled, I prepared to head home. I picked up my phone, realizing I hadn’t checked it for several hours. There was a message waiting from Melisa.
I opened it. A photograph appeared on the screen.
A dark gray men’s jacket hung from a rack inside what looked like a hotel room. The cut was familiar enough to suggest it belonged to someone I knew.
Beneath the image, Melisa had written, “Spent the entire night with Ethan. He left his jacket here.”
I stared at the photograph for quite some time.
Then I thought carefully. I couldn’t remember Ethan ever owning a jacket like that. His wardrobe consisted mostly of black and navy suits. Gray had never been a color I’d associated with him.

The intention behind the message became obvious almost immediately. Melisa was trying to provoke me.
Yet instead of feeling jealous or hurt, I remained strangely calm. I simply forwarded the photograph to Ethan and typed, “Is this your jacket? Melisa sent me this. She says you spent the entire night with her.”
Lianne’s POV:
Only a few seconds after I sent the message, Ethan called me.
I quickly answered, barely having the phone against my ear before his anxious voice poured through the speaker. “Lianne, please let me explain! I bought that jacket specifically to leave at the hotel for the plan. I never touched Melisa, not even once. Everything was staged. I swear I didn’t do anything with her! If you don’t believe me, I’ll come back right now and explain everything face-to-face.”
His frantic explanation made me want to laugh. “Ethan, I’m not angry.”
He went silent for a beat. “You’re not?”
“Of course not.” I tucked the phone between my ear and shoulder while starting the car. “I’m honestly more amused than anything. Melisa seriously thought she could use a jacket to make us turn against each other? That’s ridiculous.”
There was another brief silence before Ethan released a long breath, the tension finally leaving his voice. “I thought you were jealous.”
“It’s not that I don’t care,” I said softly. “It’s that I trust you completely. You’ve done so much for me. If I couldn’t believe you over something this trivial, then I wouldn’t deserve to be with you.”
He was quiet for several seconds before calling my name in a softened voice. “Lianne…”
I smiled. “Alright, I’ve got to go. I’m driving. I’ll talk to you when I get home.”
“Okay. Be careful.”
Before we ended the call, I casually asked what he was doing. He told me he was currently in an important meeting. I couldn’t help feeling both touched and slightly exasperated. He had actually stepped away from a crucial meeting just to make sure I understood what had happened.
Shaking my head with a smile, I put my attention back on the road. The drive home was smooth, and before long, I pulled into the driveway.
I had barely gotten out of the car when a sharp voice called from behind me. “Lianne!”
I turned and saw Melisa standing beside the flowerbed near the entrance.
