Chapter 608:

“Lianne, don’t push yourself too hard. No matter what happens, I’ll always stand by you. I just want you to be happy.”

Frank’s warm, gentle voice filled the hospital room, every word sounding unusually clear in the silence.

My heart jumped. I quickly tried to silence the audio, but the more nervous I became, the more flustered my movements were. The phone slipped from my grasp and dropped onto the carpet with a dull thud.

The entire room seemed to fall silent.

I jumped to my feet in panic. Forgetting all about the phone on the floor, I reached for Ethan’s sleeve.

“Ethan, let me explain. That was just…”

But he gave me no opportunity to speak.

He moved aside, avoiding my hand completely, then headed straight for the bathroom. Without saying a single word, he shut the door behind him. A loud bang echoed through the room.

I hurried to the bathroom door and called out through the frosted glass. “Frank said those words because he feels responsible for what happened with the video. That was all he meant. There’s nothing else behind it!”

Ethan’s cold voice came from inside. “I don’t want to hear it. Your private affairs have nothing to do with me.”

Those harsh words crashed into me like freezing water, extinguishing every trace of guilt I had been carrying.

I stood motionless outside the door. The embarrassment and frustration swelling inside me quickly twisted into an indescribable anger.

“Fine! If it has nothing to do with you, then act like you never heard it!” I shot back sharply, refusing to say another word.

I bent down, picked up the phone from the floor, and shoved it beneath the pillow with more force than necessary. Then I pulled the blanket over myself, turned my back toward the bathroom, and shut my eyes.

After everything that had happened over the past few days, I was mentally and emotionally drained. I had assumed I would lie awake until sunrise, but before long, exhaustion overtook me, and I drifted into a deep sleep.

The following morning, I woke up early.

Perhaps the worries weighing on my mind had disturbed my rest. As soon as the first traces of light filtered into the room, my eyes opened.

I turned my head and saw that Ethan was still asleep.

He was lying close by, his breathing steady and deep.

In his sleep, he looked unusually peaceful, all traces of coldness and sharpness gone.

The morning light caught the sharp lines of Ethan’s face, and his dark lashes cast soft shadows beneath his eyes.

For a brief moment, I saw the boy he used to be, bright and vibrant.

My heartbeat suddenly quickened.

Acting on impulse, I slipped a hand under my pillow, intending to grab my phone and capture his face.

I wanted to save this moment.

Even if we parted ways three days from now, even if future bitterness eventually buried every good memory, I still wanted to keep this small piece of warmth.

But as I reached under the pillow, I found nothing.

My phone was gone.

My heart clenched.
