Chapter 873:
If I went to her now, every ounce of resolve I’d built, every careful move I’d planned, would crumble to dust.
Melisa had eyes everywhere. The slightest sign that Lianne still mattered to me would put her back in Melisa’s crosshairs. Rola’s death was still etched into my mind. I would never allow Lianne to become the next victim.
Forcing every turbulent emotion back down, I spoke in an icy voice. “Pick Ruby and Silas up from school early. Tell Lianne the children aren’t feeling well and that she needs to go home immediately.”
Noah looked at me, hesitation written plainly across his face. After a long pause, he finally said, “Alpha, maybe you should go comfort her. She’s really heartbroken.”
My expression darkened. “Do as I told you.” My voice left no room for argument.

Noah opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something else, but in the end, all he could do was sigh before quietly leaving.
Once again, I was alone in the empty office.
I walked back to the sofa and sank onto it, pressing both hands hard against my aching temples. My head throbbed with unbearable pain. But compared to the guilt tearing through my heart, that physical pain was nothing.
I closed my eyes. Yet all I could see were Lianne’s tear-filled, crimson eyes.
Lianne’s POV
I forced my emotions back down, straightened the papers on my desk, and got ready to leave work.
Before I could walk out of the office, however, my phone rang. It was the school calling.
“Ms. Riley, I’m afraid Ruby and Silas have taken ill. Could you come get them right away?”
My heart lurched. Without wasting another second, I grabbed my things and hurried to the school.
On the drive there, I was filled with worry, wondering what had happened to the children.
Ethan was already carrying more than enough on his shoulders. The least I could do was take good care of Ruby and Silas so he wouldn’t have one more thing to worry about.
But when I arrived at the school and got the children into the car, I immediately sensed that something wasn’t right.
Ruby sat in the back seat, happily swinging her legs.
Silas was pretending to look weak and exhausted, yet his bright eyes darted around with far too much energy for someone who was supposedly ill.
I glanced at them through the rearview mirror and gently asked, “Are you two really feeling sick?”
Although neither Ruby nor Silas enjoyed going to school, they had always been sensible children. They would never pretend to be sick for no reason.
Ruby lowered her head, her cheeks gradually turning pink with guilt.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Silas finally admitted in a small voice, “Mom, we’re not actually sick. Noah asked us to come home early so we could stay with you.”
My heart stuttered in my chest.
Why would Noah ask them to do that?
A flicker of suspicion rose in my mind, but before I had time to think it through, my phone rang again.
It was Tracy.
