Chapter 627:
Instead of moving, he leaned heavily against the car and extended his hand toward me. “Give me a cigarette.”
I ignored the gesture. “Tracy’s carrying your baby. The last thing she needs is you smelling like smoke.”
“Just one. I need something to steady myself. Otherwise, the second I see her, I’ll probably drop to my knees begging for forgiveness. My head’s a complete mess right now,” he muttered.
I hesitated before reaching toward the unopened pack resting nearby. That was when someone familiar appeared in the rearview mirror.
Frank. He was here again.
He carried neatly wrapped breakfast bags as he walked through the apartment entrance with practiced ease, as though he belonged there. The sight dug painfully into my chest.
Jeremy noticed immediately and laughed under his breath. “Your love rival showed up right on time. Seriously, Ethan, Frank’s feelings for Lianne couldn’t be more obvious.”
I shot him a dark look. “Keep your mouth shut.”
He finally grabbed the cigarette himself, lit it, and rested against the vehicle. For once, the usual grin disappeared from his face. “So tell me honestly, are you really prepared to give up on Lianne?”

Silence stretched between us. Eventually, I forced out a single answer. “Yes.”
Smoke drifted from Jeremy’s lips as he studied me carefully. “You don’t even believe that yourself. Could you actually watch her choose Frank? Watch her stand beside him during a mating ceremony? Could you handle seeing her smile at Frank the way she once smiled at you?”
My entire body tensed, and I said firmly, “She won’t end up with him. She’s my fated mate. No matter how much hatred stands between us, no matter how far apart we are, I can’t erase her from my heart. And she won’t erase me either.”
Jeremy let out a mocking laugh. “Fated mate? Then why are you hiding down here instead of going upstairs? Werewolves are possessive by nature, Ethan. We fight for what belongs to us. You don’t walk away.”
My eyes darkened into a deeper green as my voice lowered dangerously. “You trying to start something?”
He raised his hands slightly in surrender, though the seriousness remained on his face. “I’m warning you because Frank isn’t harmless. Guys like him are patient, stubborn, and impossible to shake once they’ve decided on something. He spent years caring for Ruby and Silas without asking for anything in return. That level of devotion means more than you think. Right now, he’s exploiting the tension between you two to make his move on Lianne. Don’t underestimate him. Nobody can promise she won’t eventually choose the person who has been staying beside her during her hardest moments.”
I looked at the mirror again, now empty where Frank had stood moments earlier. My thoughts tangled into knots.
Jeremy and Tracy were dealing with misunderstandings. Lianne and I were something far uglier. Between us stood his father’s death.
Jeremy crushed the cigarette beneath his shoe and stared directly at me. “Ethan… answer me honestly one last time. Could you survive seeing her love someone else?”
Pain closed around my throat.
