Chapter 823:
The smile on her face stiffened. Finally, she reached into her handbag and produced a small bottle made of dark glass.
It contained the antidote. The medicine that could suppress the poison in Lianne’s body and keep her condition stable for another month.
I grabbed it immediately. After confirming it was genuine, I turned around without another word.
“Ethan!” she called, chasing after me and throwing herself in front of the car door. Her voice dripped with venomous curiosity. “I’m dying to know, if I keep using this drug to bend you to my will, would you really let me manipulate you for the rest of your days?”
A bitter, broken laugh followed, her eyes swirling with shadow and complexity. “I’ve never witnessed such utter devotion. Yes, I know you and Lianne are fated mates, but I’ve seen countless Alphas of your caliber keep harems of mistresses without a flicker of guilt. You’re a rarity. I’m really envious of Lianne.”
“Keep her name out of your mouth.” I yanked the car door open, my tone sharp and dangerous. “I’ll say this once. If any harm comes to Lianne, you’ll be begging me for death before I’m through.”
I fired up the engine, refusing to give her another moment of my time.

Barely a minute later, my phone erupted into a frantic vibration on the passenger seat. I answered immediately, but instead of Melisa’s usual snide provocation, I was met with terrified, sobbing pleas.
“Ethan! Help! They’re…”
“Melisa, stop the act,” I snapped, not easing off the gas. “I’ve got guards on you. Save the performance.”
“I swear I’m not acting! The guards—ah!”
A muffled, sickening thud echoed through the line, followed by a stranger’s low, gravelly laugh, and Melisa’s desperate, choked cries in the background.
“Ethan! Help me!” she screamed, her voice raw and broken, each word stabbing like a blade. “If I’m gone, so is the cure for that poison! Lianne has two months at most, so are you coming for me, or are you letting her die?”
A cold dread washed over me. I slammed the brakes.
The tires shrieked in protest, burning rubber into the pavement as the car jerked to a halt.
I didn’t give a damn about Melisa. Honestly, watching her being torn apart would have been a pleasure.
But she was Lianne’s only lifeline, and Lianne was my only weakness, the one thing that could break me. I couldn’t risk it. Not even a one-in-a-million chance, not when Lianne’s life hung in the balance.
Gritting my teeth, I spun the wheel and floored the gas, tearing back toward the restaurant.
Lianne’s POV
During the entire project meeting, I barely lifted my head from my notebook.
My pen flew across the pages, capturing every word at an almost unbelievable pace.
It had been far too long since I’d worked in such a fast-paced environment, and the unfamiliar pressure demanded every ounce of my concentration just to keep up.
I’d always had a habit of chasing perfection. To me, overlooking even the smallest detail felt like I wasn’t doing my job properly.
