Chapter 740:
“That’s wonderful! You’ve left your job, and the trial is about to begin. You’re finally reaching the end of all this!”
I tightened my grip on the phone, a faint, bittersweet smile tugging at my lips.
The end?
Maybe. But I wished it hadn’t cost me so much to get here.

When I took a taxi to Tracy’s apartment, I found Jeremy standing at the entrance, trying desperately to persuade her. For someone as proud as Jeremy, lowering himself like this was almost unimaginable. His shoulders were slumped, and he looked helpless. “Tracy, please. This checkup is important. Just let me go with you, okay?”
Tracy didn’t spare him a single glance. The moment she saw me walk in, she rushed over, clung to my arm, and pulled me straight toward the door.
Jeremy noticed me and paused for a moment before speaking. “Lianne, actually… Ethan…”
“Be quiet!” Tracy snapped. Furious, she spun around, clapped a hand over Jeremy’s mouth, and shot him a sharp warning look. “Don’t say his name! Not one word!”
I felt a sharp ache in my heart, followed by an overwhelming sense of guilt.
I hadn’t realized that everything between Ethan and me had put our close friends in such an uncomfortable position, forcing them to watch every word they said around us.
My presence seemed to make everyone uneasy.
“Tracy, maybe Jeremy should go with you instead,” I said awkwardly, stepping back. “He’s the baby’s father. He should be there.”
“No. I want you with me.” Tracy refused firmly. She held tightly to my arm and practically dragged me outside before I had the chance to object.
With no other choice, I drove her to the hospital.
On the way there, I caught sight of Jeremy’s black SUV in the rearview mirror, following us at a safe distance. Whenever I picked up speed, he did the same. Whenever I switched lanes, he followed. No matter what I did, he stayed right behind us.
Tracy glanced at the mirror and let out an annoyed sigh. “Just look at him. He’s like a stubborn shadow that won’t go away. It’s so frustrating.”
I kept my eyes on the road and smiled faintly. More than anyone else, I understood that Jeremy wasn’t following us to annoy her. He cared too deeply to leave her alone. Even if she refused to let him stay by her side, he would still protect her from a distance.
“Lianne.” Tracy suddenly turned to me, her voice serious. “On the day of the hearing, I want to be in the courtroom. I want to be there with you.”
“No.” I rejected the idea without hesitation, leaving no room for discussion. “You’re pregnant. A courtroom is stressful and emotionally exhausting. It isn’t good for you or the baby. Stay home and wait for me to tell you how it goes.”
She was quiet for a moment, then asked softly, “So… if you lose, will you appeal?”
The car fell into a heavy silence.
