Chapter 736:
“Maybe that’s for the best,” I murmured, lowering my gaze to the succulent on my desk, its leaves already beginning to wither. “I was the one who kept pushing him away. I was the one who told him to move forward. If he’s finally sold the house, then it means he’s moved on.”
“But you told me you’d go back to him after the lawsuit!” Tracy protested, unable to hide her frustration.
“When I said that, I didn’t mean we should get back together,” I said quietly, almost as if I were trying to talk myself into believing it. “My sole intention was to repay the kindness he’d shown me in years past. To taste the bitterness of love unreturned, to know the sting of being rejected time and again, just as he had been by me. I was in his debt, and I had no claim on his patience. It was only natural, then, that he would eventually let go and begin again elsewhere.”
After the call ended, I remained seated in silence.
Outside, the afternoon sunlight flooded the city with warmth. Inside, I felt as though I’d been frozen solid.

As the trial drew closer, sleep became increasingly unbearable. Night after night, the same nightmare returned.
The judge’s gavel struck. “Not guilty.”
Rola stood at the defendant’s table, wearing a triumphant smile. Behind her stood Ethan. His expression was cold and empty, as though I were nothing more than a stranger.
The dream refused to release me. No matter how desperately I struggled, I couldn’t wake up.
Then everything shifted. Rola was suddenly seated high above me, looking down from the judge’s bench with mocking superiority.
Her weathered face leaned closer until it filled my vision. “Lianne,” she hissed, her voice dripping with contempt. “Did you really believe you could stand against the entire Thorn Pack alone? Did you truly think Ethan would have me face legal punishment just for you?”
I jerked awake with a violent gasp. Cold sweat soaked my clothes, and my heartbeat pounded painfully against my ribs.
Beyond the window, darkness stretched endlessly. Sleep never returned. I could only lie there with open eyes, waiting for morning to arrive.
After breakfast, Tracy called again.
She told me she’d looked into the sale records for the house. Then she fell silent. For a long while, neither of us spoke.
When she finally broke the silence, her voice trembled. “Lianne, I always believed Ethan loved you enough that somehow you’d find your way back to each other.” She paused, swallowing hard. “But now, I finally believe it. It’s really over.”
Leaning against the cold wall, I let out a weary breath. “I’ve known for a long time that there were too many things standing between us. He couldn’t keep carrying everything by himself forever. I was exhausted. And he was too.”
Not wanting to dwell on the subject any longer, Tracy suggested we have dinner together.
I gently declined, saying I still had things to take care of.
Ever since my argument with Jeremy, I’d deliberately kept my distance from them.
Only after ending the call did I notice several unread messages waiting on my phone. They were all from Damien.
