Chapter 917:

I turned my attention back to the road. My hands tightened around the wheel as a faint, icy smile curved across my mouth. Every part of this had unfolded exactly as I expected. Even the poison she had slipped into my drink.

One day, she was going to answer for all of it. By the time I reached the company, the poison was already taking effect.

At two in the afternoon, I was seated at the head of the conference table for an executive meeting while the financial director went through the quarterly figures.

Initially, I felt only a slight imbalance, nothing severe enough to raise concern. I assumed exhaustion from the previous night was catching up with me, so I reached for the glass of ice water nearby and took a swallow, hoping the cold would sharpen my senses. It didn’t. Within minutes, another powerful wave of dizziness swept over me, followed by another.

I curled my hands into fists, pressing my nails hard against my palms. The sting gave me something sharp enough to cling to as I fought to remain alert. Cold sweat gathered along my forehead before sliding down the sides of my face.

Noah, seated beside me, noticed the change almost immediately. He leaned closer, keeping his voice low enough that no one else at the table could hear. “Alpha, are you okay?”

Ethan’s POV:

I gave a slight shake of my head and answered in a subdued voice, “Keep going.”

There was no way I could allow anyone to discover that I’d been drugged. If word got out, everything I’d painstakingly arranged would fall apart. The people manipulating Melisa were still keeping a close eye on me, waiting for any sign that something was wrong. I had to endure it. I had to hold on until the drug reached its full effect. Only then would I have a chance of obtaining the final antidote Lianne needed.

The meeting stretched on for another hour and a half.

To me, every second felt like torture. My eyesight gradually deteriorated. The figures printed on the documents began swimming together, the numbers twisting into strange shapes until I had to narrow my eyes just to decipher them.

Then nausea rose violently from my stomach. I swallowed it back and forced myself to remain seated, refusing to let anyone notice what was happening to me.

By the time the meeting finally ended, I was barely holding myself together.

I somehow managed to return to my office. The instant the door closed behind me, my legs gave way. I staggered backward and pressed myself against the door, dragging in desperate breaths.

I knew exactly what this drug could do. Severe hallucinations were only one of its effects.

Lianne had once suffered because of this very poison. It had intensified her depression until she was pushed dangerously close to the edge, nearly destroying her completely. The memory flashed through my mind. I gripped the wall for support and stumbled toward my desk. Once I reached it, I planted both hands firmly against the surface and stared down at them. They were trembling uncontrollably.
