Chapter 165:
“You don’t need to call so many people. Your friends may not actually accept me,” I said evenly.
“As long as I’m there, no one will question you.” He drew me into his arms and rested his chin on top of my head, his voice low and resolute. “Lianne, trust me.”
I leaned against him and listened to the steady beat of his heart, but to me it felt impossibly far away.
Later in the bedroom, I was just about to take my medicine when Ethan pushed the door open. He spotted the pill bottle on the table at once. His expression tightened, and he strode over and snatched it from my hand.
Lianne’s POV:
“Why are you still on medication? Is your stomach bothering you again?” Ethan checked the prescription label on the bottle, and a note of worry entered his voice. “Tomorrow, I’m taking you to the hospital for a full examination.”
“That won’t be necessary. It’s an old problem.” My heart jolted, but I made myself stay composed as I took the bottle from him. “The doctor said this kind of thing had to be managed gradually. There’s no quick fix. Going to the hospital won’t show anything. I’ve just been under too much pressure lately, so it’s flaring up again.”
He looked at me for a long time, as though trying to tell whether I was telling the truth. After quite a while, he finally gave a reluctant nod. “If you feel unwell, you have to tell me.”
That night, by the time Ethan came back after dealing with urgent work, I was already lying on my side with my eyes closed, pretending to be asleep.
Half-conscious, I felt the mattress dip, and then a burning-hot body pressed up against mine. He wrapped his arms around me tightly from behind.
That instinctive pull made me unconsciously lean back into him, reaching for the warmth I knew so well.

His breath brushed the side of my neck, uneven and tinged with desire.
His hand moved slowly along my waist, then finally, as if under a spell, came to rest over my lower belly.
In that instant, it felt as though lightning had struck me, and every hair on my body stood on end.
Inside me, a tiny life had already been growing for thirteen weeks.
I still wasn’t showing, but with a werewolf’s sharp sense of touch, even the slightest change in shape or pulse could give everything away.
I let out a startled sound, shoved his hand away hard, and recoiled to the very edge of the bed.
Ethan went still. He pushed himself up and frowned at me in the dark. “Lianne? What’s wrong?”
“I had a bad dream.” I struggled to catch my breath, my heart pounding wildly, my hands covering my lower abdomen as if to shield it. “I’m sorry. I overreacted.”
Ethan was quiet for a moment, then lay back down and gathered me into his arms once more. Only this time, his hand settled properly on my shoulder.
