Chapter 266:
Was he toasting to the freedom waiting for him, or grieving the child that had supposedly died?
Without another thought, I went straight upstairs and pushed open the door to the master bedroom.
At once, a strong, almost stinging smell of whiskey rushed at me.
Ethan was stretched across the center of the large bed, still wearing the clothes from before.
The curtains had been pulled shut, leaving the whole room steeped in a bleak darkness.
I walked to the bedside and looked down at his face. Even asleep, his brows were tightly drawn.

“Ethan, wake up. It’s time to sever the bond,” I called out.
He only shifted restlessly and let out a low sound, never opening his eyes.
He was clearly drunk for real, stripped of the sharp vigilance an Alpha of the Thorn Pack should have had.
A bitter smile tugged at me as I wondered whether this was just another trick to stall for time.
But why would he want to stall?
Once our bond was broken, he would finally be free to bring Ivy back openly and repay that so-called debt of gratitude.
I turned to leave, meaning to come back after he had sobered up.
But the moment I stepped away, a burning hand suddenly caught hold of my wrist.
“Lianne, don’t go. Don’t leave me…” Ethan muttered in his sleep, his voice rough and fractured.
I frowned and tried to pull my hand free. “Let go.”
“Lianne, I love you. I’m sorry. I love you…”
The instant those three words left his mouth, I went completely still, as though some spell had frozen me in place.
For a second, I thought I had imagined it.
There was a time when I had wanted nothing more than for Ethan to love me, for those words to come from his own mouth.
But through all three years of our mate bond, I waited and waited, and he never said them even once.
And now, we were standing at the very end of that bond.
After ruining my family and indirectly bringing about the “death” of our child, he was saying he loved me in his sleep?
Thinking I must have heard wrong, I bent closer and asked, “Ethan, what did you say?”
“I love you. Don’t leave me. I know I was wrong. Lianne, please…” he replied, his grip absurdly tight, his nails nearly pressing into my skin.
I dropped my eyes and watched a tear slide from the corner of his eye, yet inside me, there was only a frightening stillness.
He had to be mistaking me for someone else. Or maybe this was only that shallow remorse of his surfacing again.
Love that came too late meant nothing, especially when it stood on the ruins of everything that had already been destroyed.
I tried to peel his fingers off me, but he suddenly yanked me down with force.
My body was already weak, and I lost my footing without warning, falling onto him.
