Chapter 97:
“Lianne, I said I would spend time with you. I didn’t promise anything else.” He tore his arm from my grasp. “Ivy’s life is at risk, and romance is still the only thing on your mind. I never knew you were this selfish, without even the smallest bit of compassion.”
“I’m the one without compassion?” I stared at him, stunned, as tears filled my eyes. “Then what about my feelings? What am I supposed to be to you?”
The hard slam of the door was the only answer he gave me.
He walked out without the slightest hesitation, never once looking back.
That night, I curled up on the cold, deserted bed, trembling without stop.
When I woke the next morning, the place beside me was empty.
Ethan had not come back, and there was no message from him either.
After breakfast, I forced myself to settle my thoughts and asked the driver to take me to the hospital to visit Harold.
The moment I got out of the car, my heart dropped. Ethan’s unmistakable car was parked right there in the lot.
He was here?
With that weight pressing on me, I hurried toward the ward.

But just as I reached the door, a voice made my blood run cold.
“Harold, I made this soup just for you. Please taste it and tell me whether you like it.”
It was Ivy.
I stood there motionless, looking through the glass panel in the door.
She was sitting beside Harold’s bed with a graceful smile, while Ethan stood behind her, his hand resting on her shoulder as if it belonged there.
Even Rola was not driving her away; instead, she was talking with Ivy.
In that moment, it felt as though my whole body had frozen solid.
Ethan had brought his mistress to see his grandparents while his grandfather was sick, and while our mate bond still had not been dissolved.
What place did he think that left for me, his fated mate?
Lianne’s POV
The sting of disinfectant filled my lungs, sending a cold shiver through me in waves.
I couldn’t take it anymore, so I turned suddenly and nearly staggered into the nearby restroom to hide.
I didn’t want to see Ivy.
I remained on the freezing tiles for a long while before drawing a deep breath and pushing the door open.
I had assumed they were already gone, but fate always seemed to make things worse at the worst possible time.
“Well, if it isn’t Lianne?” Ivy was standing right outside the restroom, as though she had known I would walk out.
“Why are you hiding in here instead of staying in the ward? Too ashamed to walk in?” She gave a quiet laugh, her eyes brimming with ridicule.
I lifted myself up straight, suppressing the storm inside me, and answered with a cold smile, “I came in here so you wouldn’t humiliate yourself. Otherwise, Ethan’s grandparents might throw you out, and you’d end up crying your eyes out.”
Ivy’s smile stiffened at once, and a flicker of anger twisted her delicate features.
I had no interest in saying anything more to her, so I turned to leave.
“Stop!” Ivy’s voice turned sharp. “Lianne, I need to say something to you.”
