Chapter 850:
When it was time to draw blood, I deliberately found an excuse to send Ethan away. “I’d like a cup of warm milk. Could you check whether there’s any in the kitchen?”
He immediately frowned, his gaze shifting cautiously between Melisa and me. The concern in his eyes was impossible to hide.
Only after I repeatedly urged him did he reluctantly nod. “If anything happens, call me immediately,” he reminded me in a low voice. “I’ll be right outside.”
“I know.” I smiled reassuringly. “Go on.”
Only then did he leave, quietly closing the living room door behind him. Now, only Melisa and I remained.
She lowered her head and calmly arranged the medical instruments with practiced ease, as though we were about to have nothing more than an ordinary examination.
Not wanting to waste time with pleasantries, I got straight to the point. “Melisa, I saw your post about your engagement.” I paused briefly. “Congratulations.”
Her hands paused for the briefest moment. Then she slowly looked up, meeting my eyes with a calm expression. “Thank you. But there’s something you should know first.” She deliberately slowed her next sentence. “The mate my family arranged for me… is Ethan.”
She spoke his name with unmistakable emphasis.
At the same time, a faint glimmer of provocation flashed through her eyes.

Even though I had already guessed the truth, hearing her admit it herself still made my heart tighten painfully.
Behind my mask of calm, I was anything but. But I answered without hesitation, “Ethan will never agree to this.”
She laughed softly, her eyes glinting with an emotion I couldn’t decipher. “You’re not wrong—his love for you has never wavered. But I’m the one who changed my mind.”
My chest tightened.
I hadn’t expected this.
She’d been the one wishing us happiness, and now she’d flipped completely.
“Melisa,” I said, locking eyes with her, my voice quiet but steel-edged, “let me be clear. Ethan is mine. Ivy proved what happens to anyone who thinks otherwise. Don’t walk down a road that only ends in pain.”
She smiled, unbothered. “I’m not Ivy. I won’t lose myself chasing something unattainable.” She swabbed my arm, her movements unhurried. “Trust me—I know what I’m doing.”
The needle stung as it broke my skin, but the real jolt came from her words.
“Lianne, I never wanted any part in the grudge between you and the Thorn Pack.” She withdrew the syringe, dabbed a cotton swab over the puncture, and lifted her eyes to mine. “But the lawsuit you pushed forward forced me into the middle of it. I became a pawn sacrificed for their gain, with no way out except to forge my own path.”
She paused, something dark passing through her gaze. “I gave you a chance to back down. You threw it away.”
I held her stare. “And now? What do you want?”
Melisa set down her syringe and leaned back. “I built my life around work, never letting myself want more. But seeing how Ethan loves you—how he’d burn the world for you—it broke something in me.”
