Chapter 80:
I leaned against the headboard and tried to piece everything together before I lost consciousness. “It was a black sedan. It suddenly cut in front of me on the highway. I tried to avoid it and ended up hitting the guardrail. Then a white car crashed into me from behind.”
This didn’t feel like an accident. It felt planned.
Once the police left, I borrowed their phone and thought about calling Ethan.
But the image of him shielding Ivy came back to me.

Right now, he was probably with her, taking care of her like she mattered most.
A bitter smile formed on my lips. Instead of calling him, I dialed the maid at home and asked her to bring me some daily necessities.
The general ward was noisy. Voices from the next bed filled the room, but none of it registered. Inside, everything felt empty.
Who would want me dead?
Just then, I sensed someone standing at the door. A tall figure stepped in.
Even without seeing clearly, I knew it was Ethan the moment that familiar scent reached me.
“Lianne!”
Before I could respond, he was already beside me. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me in with a force I couldn’t resist.
No matter how I tried, I couldn’t break free from his hold.
When he finally let go, I felt a little stiff. “Why are you here?”
“I felt something was wrong,” he said, his fingers closing around my hand. His touch felt cold. “I couldn’t calm down, so I called home. The maid told me you were in a car accident. Why didn’t you contact me right away?”
“Why would I call you? So I could interrupt whatever you had going on with Ivy?” I turned my face away.
Ethan went quiet for a moment and didn’t deny it. Instead, he changed the subject. “It’s too loud here. This isn’t a good place for you to recover.”
Before I could respond, he had already made arrangements. Soon after, he helped me move to a private room on the top floor.
As he guided me there, his movements were careful and steady. His hand rested around my waist, and I could feel the warmth of his palm even through the thin hospital gown. That familiar closeness stirred something in me, and my eyes began to sting.
“Does anything else hurt? Your legs? Your waist?” he asked as he adjusted the pillows behind me. His fingers brushed over the scrape on my ankle as he checked it.
The way he treated me caught me off guard.
“Are you hungry? What do you feel like eating?” he continued, sitting beside the bed. His attention stayed on me.
I suddenly remembered what Ivy had said before. “He’s especially good at red wine braised beef. He used to make it for me all the time.”
“I want to eat something you make,” I said, facing his blurred outline. “Can you cook?”
The moment I said it, I regretted it. I shouldn’t have spoken without thinking.
But to my surprise, Ethan agreed.
“What do you feel like eating?” he asked, his voice steady and serious. “Just say it. I’ll cook it for you.”
