Chapter 670:
As I continued sorting through the reports on my desk, my eyes kept drifting toward my phone, unconsciously waiting for news that his meeting had ended.
The hours slipped by. Sleepiness slowly overtook me, weighing down my eyelids until I could no longer stay awake. Resting my head on the cool desktop, I drifted off without meaning to.
I had no idea how long I’d been out when the vibration of my phone jolted me awake.
It was Ethan.
Lianne’s POV:
Sleep still clung to me when I picked up the ringing phone.
I mumbled, “Ethan… that bouquet was just an apology from my coworker Zoe, not a gift from an admirer. Please leave Noah alone, and honestly, stop sending flowers to the entire female staff. It’s completely excessive.”
An extended silence stretched across the line.

Ethan offered no defense, nor did he counter with his usual sharp remarks. He simply replied with a quiet, “Alright.”
“Rest well…” I breathed as sleep pulled me under again.
The phone slipped from my fingers without being disconnected, coming to rest right beside my pillow.
Unbeknownst to me, Ethan, far away in Nshire, stayed on the line, listening to the gentle rhythm of my breathing until dawn finally broke across the sky.
The following morning, I woke to find my phone screen completely dark, the battery having drained entirely.
In a flurry of panic, I plugged it in, and the instant the screen came back to life, the events of the previous night came rushing back like a flood.
I sat frozen under the sheets, wishing the floor would open up and swallow me.
What in the world had I said during the night?
Not only had I offered an unprompted explanation for everything, but I had practically thrown Noah under the bus as well.
Agitated, I ran my fingers through my hair and, gripped by the fear that Ethan might take his irritation out on Noah, I hurriedly called him to smooth things over.
“You’re awake.” His tone carried a husky quality, laced with a subtle trace of amusement.
“Um, about last night, I was barely conscious.” Overcome with embarrassment, I stumbled through an explanation, the words tumbling out too fast. “I was just talking nonsense. Noah didn’t tell me anything, so please don’t blame him…”
“Talking nonsense?” Ethan gave a quiet laugh, a sound that traveled through the line and sent a subtle shiver down my spine.
He then repeated every single sentence I had said the night before, mimicking even my drowsy mumbling with precise accuracy.
My cheeks flamed so intensely I thought they might catch fire, and I wanted nothing more than to end the call immediately.
“Lianne.” Ethan suddenly said my name, his tone dropping into a soft, affectionate cadence that felt nearly hypnotic. “My intention truly was to send you flowers. And to be clear, I wanted to send them only to you.”
My heart skipped a beat. Flustered, I stammered a few unintelligible words before abruptly hanging up, practically sprinting out the door to work.
