Chapter 554:
“Mommy, that’s basically manipulation,” he said coolly. “You just want to impress him and make us do the cleaning.”
Caught off guard by his bluntness, I couldn’t help but laugh. I reached out to ruffle his hair, but before I could, heavy footsteps approached from behind.
“Let them be. I don’t mind.”
Ethan came out of the kitchen carrying breakfast plates, which he set down on the dining table with ease.
He walked over and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me into him naturally. Then he rested his chin lightly against my neck. He carried the faint smell of cooking, but underneath it, that clean mint scent was still there. The sheer, grounded domesticity of that blend made me emotional.
“You and the kids can do whatever you want. I don’t care if the house gets messy,” he muttered, his voice rough but tender.
I tilted my head slightly and teased him, “That’s quite the double standard. At the hospital, when Melisa helped hold you steady, you almost burned the shirt you were wearing.”

The moment Melisa was mentioned, Ethan’s expression instantly turned cold. He answered without hesitation, “I just can’t stand anyone else touching me except you. It makes me uncomfortable.”
“My, my. The Alpha and his strange obsession with cleanliness.” I looked at him with amusement and teased, “Are you worried I’ll get jealous? I’m not that petty. During treatment, it’s completely normal for a doctor to care for their patient.”
Instead of feeling reassured, Ethan only let out a quiet sigh. His arms tightened around me, pulling me closer. There was a hint of longing and possessiveness in his voice as he said, “Sometimes I wish you were more petty. I want you to care more. I want you to hold onto me, to stop me from leaving, even if it means you get jealous sometimes. The more understanding and generous you are, the more I feel like you’re prepared to leave me whenever you want.”
Looking into his eyes and seeing the fear in them, I felt a dull ache in my heart. I couldn’t help but smile. I leaned closer and kissed his lips lightly. “Go eat your breakfast, you fool.”
After breakfast, Ethan didn’t summon any servants. Instead, he bent down and began picking up the toys scattered across the floor, placing them back where they belonged one by one.
I stood nearby and watched him. I knew better than anyone that Ethan’s obsession with cleanliness had never gone away. He was simply willing to set aside the rules and habits he had followed for decades because of us.
“Noah has already booked the plane tickets to Gelidmark,” he said casually while gathering Ruby’s sketchbooks.
“Gelidmark?” I paused briefly. “Why are we going there now? Isn’t the snow season already over?”
Gelidmark was a place I had casually mentioned wanting to visit some time ago.
