Chapter 386:
I hadn’t believed a word of it. But Silas’s appearance was too sudden. Too unexpected. I needed to know the truth.
“Silas…” I said carefully. “How about we make a deal?”
He lifted a brow, as if he had expected as much. “Let’s hear it.”
“You ask me one question, and I’ll answer honestly. In return, you tell me your mommy’s last name. Deal?”
Silas thought about it for a long time. His small hands moved restlessly inside his pocket as he pondered.
Then he drew in a deep breath. When he looked up again, his expression was so serious it didn’t belong on a child’s face. Word by word, he asked, “Why did you abandon me after I was born? Why did you leave her to suffer all alone?”
The question pierced my heart, and it began to ache badly.
I stared into his eyes and saw it clearly. The grievance. The hurt. The resentment buried deep inside him. Slowly, I raised my right hand into the sunlight spilling through the window and said the heaviest words I had ever spoken. “Silas, I swear to you, before yesterday, before I saw you, I never knew you existed. If I had known, even if I had to search every corner of this world, I would never have let you and your mother suffer alone.”

Silas froze. His eyes searched my face as if trying to separate truth from lies.
After a pause, I asked softly, “Now, will you tell me your mommy’s last name?”
After a long moment of silence, he turned his face away and muttered, “I won’t tell you.”
“You’re backing out?” I chuckled. I wasn’t even upset.
“I said I would think about it,” he replied with a sly grin. “I never said I would actually tell you.”
Then he turned around and headed inside.
“Your mommy’s last name is Riley?” I instinctively called out Lianne’s surname.
Silas whirled around instantly like a cat whose tail got stepped on. “It’s not!” he shouted, panic flashing across his face.
“Then Brooks?” I asked, testing Ivy’s surname next.
“No!” he snapped, cheeks burning red. “You’re cheating! Stop guessing!” He looked genuinely alarmed, terrified I might stumble onto the right answer.
And in that instant, I felt huge relief. The heavy darkness that had been pressing against my heart all night finally lifted.
From Silas’s reaction, I knew one thing for sure. It wasn’t Ivy.
I didn’t ask another question. I didn’t need to. Because in my heart, I already had my answer.
For Silas to protect his mother this fiercely, she had to be the most important person in his world.
And only one woman could have raised a child this clever, this spirited, this upright while still mischievous enough to outwit me at every turn. Who else could it be but my Lianne?
I rose to my feet and watched Silas disappear into the house. My gaze hardened with conviction.
