Chapter 83:
“My eyesight doesn’t matter. It won’t stop me from signing the papers or completing the ritual,” I said firmly, looking at him through the haze in my vision. “Ethan, if we’re going to reach this point sooner or later, what’s the point of dragging it out?”
“Are you really that desperate to sever our bond?” He strode toward me suddenly, his voice tight with barely restrained anger. “Is it because of Frank? Or do you just want to get rid of me that badly?”
My heart twisted hard, so painfully I could barely breathe.
I clutched the sheets tightly, but still forced out my answer, one word at a time. “Yes! I want my freedom. I want to begin a new life. Does that satisfy you now?”
“Fine.” Ethan laughed, but the sound came from sheer fury, cold enough to make me shudder. “Since you can’t wait that badly, I’ll give you what you want. Tomorrow, we’ll dissolve this damned mate bond.”
Lianne’s POV
I woke up early the next morning. After washing up, I changed into a fitted beige suit that gave me a clean, sharp look.
Once I finished breakfast, I sat at the edge of the bed and waited.
Nine o’clock passed. Then ten. Then eleven.

It wasn’t until 2:00 p.m. that the door finally opened.
Ethan walked in late. Even without seeing clearly, I could tell he looked worn out.
“Something came up this morning,” he said, his tone casual, as if no explanation was needed.
I didn’t ask what it was. There was no need. Aside from Ivy, nothing else would make him show up this late.
“It’s fine,” I said with a small smile as I stood. “Let’s go. If we leave now, we can still make it to City Hall.”
Ethan didn’t move. Instead, he stood there, watching me.
“You seem happy,” he said after a moment, his voice low. “Are you really that eager to leave me?”
Shouldn’t he be the one eager to dump me?
For a brief second, it felt like he was mocking me.
Bitterness rose up in my chest, heavy and hard to ignore.
I pressed my nails into my palms and forced out a laugh. “Of course I am. I’m finally free. Why wouldn’t I be happy? This bond has been over for a long time. Keeping it alive only made things worse for both of us.”
“Is that how you see it?” he said with a faint scoff. “Then congratulations, Lianne.”
We had just reached the door when two police officers stepped into our path.
“Ms. Riley, sorry to interrupt,” one of them said as he showed his badge. “About the car accident a few days ago, we’ve caught two suspects. However, they’re claiming it was drunk driving and deny being hired. We need you to come with us and give another statement to make sure nothing was missed.”
Ethan halted beside me and pulled me closer without hesitation. His arm settled over my shoulder, and his Alpha scent closed in around me.
“I’m her husband,” he said, looking straight at the officers. “I want to know exactly what’s going on.”
The officers exchanged a glance, then motioned for us to sit back down.
