Chapter 409:
His voice remained even and emotionless. “As for Brinewick…” He paused briefly before continuing, “you’ve been absent for too long. The project’s progress has already fallen behind schedule. Frankly, I no longer believe you’re capable of handling it.”
For a moment, I could not find a single word to say.
Of course, he had planned every step from the very beginning. From acquiring Nexith Group to forcing this reassignment onto me now, every move had been calculated with terrifying precision.
Compared to him, all my resistance looked childish and pathetic.

“Ethan, you did this deliberately!” I snapped at last, my chest rising sharply with anger. “You just want to trap me here so you can watch me suffer, don’t you?”
Only then did he finally lift his eyes toward me. There was no anger in them. That was the most frightening part. His gaze was calm, controlled, almost amused in a way that sent coldness creeping through my veins.
A low chuckle escaped him, smooth and magnetic enough to make my entire body tense instinctively.
“Ms. Riley,” he said lazily, “while we’re at the company, I believe you should address me properly.”
He paused deliberately before emphasizing the word. “Alpha.”
I stared at him in disbelief, fury and humiliation crashing violently inside my chest until all that remained was exhaustion.
“You were the one who forbade me from calling you that in the past!” The words escaped before I could stop them. Years of resentment burst free in an instant, tearing straight through every bit of restraint I had left.
The office fell silent.
Ethan’s pen paused faintly between his fingers before he slowly raised his eyes again.
Rather than being upset, a faint smile crossed his face, and his deep eyes glinted with amusement. “You’re correct, that was ‘in the past.’”
His eyes locked onto mine. “And back then, what were we? And now,” he continued calmly, “what are we?”
The question hit me so hard I could not answer.
Back then, we had been mates. Close enough to share breaths in bed. Close enough that he allowed me to whisper his name against his lips instead of addressing him formally like everyone else. As though that small permission could erase the natural hierarchy between Alpha and Omega.
But now? Now he was the untouchable CEO standing above everyone else. And I was just an employee trapped beneath his control.
His calm professionalism only made me look ridiculous, as though I were the only one still clinging to the past like some irrational woman unable to let go.
“If this is purely work-related,” I forced out coldly, swallowing the bitterness clawing at my throat, “then there was no reason to call me here alone.”
I lifted my eyes toward him stubbornly. “Nobody even comes to this floor. Bringing me here so publicly will only make people misunderstand.”
“Misunderstand?” He placed his pen on the desk and leaned back in his chair. His demeanor appeared at ease, yet it carried an unmistakable air of authority. “What sort of misunderstandings?”
“That…” My voice tightened. “That you’re still not over me. That you still have feelings for me!”
