Chapter 657:
“Stop lying to me.” I let out a frustrated sigh. I was angry, but my worry outweighed my anger. My emotions got the better of me and tears began to well up in my eyes. “Noah already told me everything. You’ve always acted like nothing can bring you down, but you’re not invincible. Even if you don’t care about yourself, at least think about Ruby and Silas. They need their father.”
He didn’t answer. The silence stretched on for a while.
“I understand,” he finally said softly. There was an unexpected hint of compliance in his reply.
After the call ended, I sank into my chair, completely exhausted, and let out a long, weary sigh.
Our relationship now was filled with awkwardness and tension.
Every conversation with him left me carefully choosing each word before I spoke. I was afraid that saying too much would blur the boundaries between us, yet saying too little would make me seem heartless.
Every bit of care I still held for him had to stay hidden beneath polite, restrained conversation, like a secret that could never be brought into the open.
Ethan’s POV:
The moment the call ended, the car fell into an oppressive silence.
I sat in the back seat as the car carried me to a banquet. Outside the window, the dazzling neon lights of the foreign city streamed past and then disappeared into the distance. I stared at my dark phone screen with a cold expression.

“Noah.” My voice was rough, carrying a clear authority that allowed no argument. “Don’t ever tell Lianne about my condition again.”
Noah’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. He glanced at me through the rearview mirror, confusion written across his face. “Alpha, I don’t understand. Ms. Riley sounded very worried about you.”
“She would never call me out of nowhere to ask about the kids unless she’d heard something,” I said calmly, a bitter smile touching my lips. “Her clumsy excuse couldn’t fool me. She must have learned that I’m sick, so she called just to show a little sympathy.”
“Alpha, she still cares about you,” Noah said, trying to convince me. “If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have bothered calling at all.”
“I don’t want only her concern,” I said softly, closing my eyes as another sharp cramp tore through my stomach.
I wanted her complete trust, her unconditional love, and for her to run into my arms the way she used to.
But Rola’s sins had destroyed everything between us.
Every time I reached for Lianne, the truth about her father’s death cut through my heart like a knife.
We had spent every day together, inseparable, believing our love would last forever. Yet the happiness we once shared only made my guilt heavier.
I bore some responsibility for her father’s death.
There are moments I wish I had never been born into this family — and that I wasn’t Rola’s grandson.
I suddenly coughed violently, and the familiar metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.
Lianne’s POV:
Whenever I buried myself in work, time slipped by fast.
When I finally lifted my head from the towering stack of project reports, it was already dark outside, and the streetlights glowed faintly.
I sat up abruptly as Frank’s birthday dinner suddenly came back to me.
