Chapter 277:
Every rational thought urged me to start the car and get away at once, yet my eyes refused to obey, trailing after him with a pull that was half yearning and half dread.
What was wrong with me?
Did I still want to see Ethan?
The moment that thought surfaced, a chill shot through me and jarred me back to my senses.
I dragged my gaze away, forcing down the chaos surging inside my chest, and started the car.
I kept telling myself that dream had ended long ago. Three years ago, I had killed that pitiful version of myself with my own hands. I should not let myself get tangled up in this anymore.
By the time I returned to the company parking lot, I noticed Alex standing by the elevator with obvious anxiety written all over him. The moment he saw my car, he hung up at once and hurried toward me.
“Lianne! We found out! Just like you thought, a young woman from the design department secretly got in touch with that stubborn holdout and told him to demand five million dollars, planning to pocket a million for herself. She’s lost her mind! She nearly caused the investor to pull out altogether!”
I pushed open the car door and stepped out, my face already back to its usual composure. I gave a faint smile.

“It’s a good thing we uncovered it in time. We can still contain the damage. The holdout is already starting to waver. Have the designer who leaked the plans get in touch with him. Tell him the company is revising the blueprints. Since she already has his trust, we’ll use that to get him to sign the one-million-dollar agreement. She can make up for what she’s done.”
Alex paused for a second, clearly having trouble keeping up with my train of thought, but he quickly nodded. “Brilliant! You’re always ahead of everyone else. I’ll handle it.”
As he turned to go, a powerful sense of unease swept over me, making me stop him. “Alex, wait.”
“What is it?”
“Isn’t our project’s investor Bridgeview Capital?” I asked cautiously, my palms slick with sweat.
“Yes. Didn’t you read the latest tender documents?” Alex looked at me oddly, then gave a small laugh. “Bridgeview Capital used to be independent, but Voss Group acquired it outright six months ago. Everyone in investment banking is trying to get under Voss Group’s umbrella. Without the Alpha’s cash flow, how could our twenty-billion-dollar project have moved this quickly?”
I went completely still, my mind buzzing as though something had detonated inside it.
“You mean… Bridgeview Capital’s parent company is now Voss Group?”
“You didn’t know?” Alex clicked his tongue, his voice carrying a trace of envy. “Ethan, the CEO of Voss Group, is a top-tier Alpha. He’s young, gifted, and good-looking. But I’ve heard he’s become especially ruthless over the past few years. Oh, right…”
Something seemed to occur to him, and he added teasingly, “The last time I went to your place, I met Ruby. Now that I think about it, her features and the way she carries herself really do resemble Ethan. Funny coincidence, isn’t it?”
