Chapter 282:
Noah’s reply came swiftly. “What about the rumors of you having a new mate? Should I retract them and clarify the truth?”
I looked out into the deep black night, voice flat and calm. “No need.”
Pretending I had already moved on would shield me from countless unwanted complications.
I recalled those social gatherings, the she-wolves strutting toward me, hips swaying, perfume cloying and sweet to the point of nausea, their smiles sharp, hollow, and greedy. In those moments, my thoughts always wandered back to Lianne.
I longed for her faint, fresh scent, like a forest just after rain. I longed for the tiny sparkles in her eyes when she laughed. I longed for the sight of her bustling, awkward yet charming, in the kitchen for me.
A sharp twist of pain gripped my chest.
Apart from Lianne, I felt no interest, no desire to entertain the advances of any other she-wolf.
Lianne’s POV:
After finishing the towering pile of paperwork at the office, I massaged my stiff neck and grabbed a quick meal at the restaurant downstairs.

By the time I returned to my room, Alex’s call came through, perfectly timed.
“Lianne, I’ve contacted the designer. She’s on her way to meet you now.”
“Send her straight to my room,” I replied flatly. “You didn’t intimidate her over the phone, did you?”
“Not at all. I followed your instructions perfectly. I had a colleague she trusts gently extract the details, so she believes you’re calling about design matters.”
Shortly after I hung up, the doorbell rang.
I opened the door, and a small, slender woman stood there.
She wore a plain white dress, her hair tumbling down past her shoulders. She looked barely in her twenties, her eyes flickering with hesitation, as if she were stepping into a world she barely understood.
“Hello, are you Ms. Riley?” she asked quietly, fidgeting with the edge of her dress.
“I am. Please, come in.” I stepped aside, letting her enter, and closed the door behind her.
In one glance, I saw the faint glimmer of hope tucked deep within her gaze.
I had encountered far too many like her over the past three years, eager for success, but still clinging to naive fantasies.
I poured a glass of water and set it on the table, speaking without preamble. “What is your name?”
“Zoe Hinks,” she said, her hands shaking as she took the glass, her body taut with unease.
“Relax, Zoe.” I perched on the small couch opposite her, legs crossed, my tone cool and uncompromising. “Leaking the blueprints caused serious trouble for the company. I’m offering you a chance to correct it.”
I had no patience for mind games with someone at her level, so I tore right through the facade.
Zoe’s complexion went pale in an instant, and the glass she held wobbled dangerously in her hands.
She parted her lips, but no words emerged.
