Chapter 139:
As I got into the car, I happened to glance at the half-open glove compartment by the passenger seat and saw an elegant dark blue velvet ring box inside.
My heart jolted.
It was a ring. Was this the surprise he had prepared for me?
Lianne’s POV
When I got to the restaurant, I found out Ethan had booked the entire top floor.
The private room was extravagantly romantic, with red rose petals strewn all around, red candles flickering in every corner, and the air heavy with the aroma of pricey champagne.
Ethan walked up to me carrying a huge bouquet of red roses, pressed a soft kiss to my forehead, and said in a gentle voice, “Darling, these are for you.”
It was the first time he had ever called me “darling.”

I stared at him, slightly dazed, his tenderness so unfamiliar that it almost felt like we were deeply in love.
Dinner passed without a hitch. He sliced my steak for me, carefully leaving out the side dishes I disliked, and kept me company through glass after glass of red wine.
I kept waiting, waiting for him to take out that ring box.
But as the meal was ending, Ethan only put down his wine glass and looked at me with apology in his eyes. “Lianne, I’m sorry. There’s been so much happening at the company. I haven’t had the chance to prepare a proper gift for you. Give me a few more days, and I promise I’ll surprise you with something even bigger.”
At that moment, my whole body stiffened.
He hadn’t prepared a gift?
What about the ring box in the car?
The warmth that had only just started to rise in my chest was snuffed out at once by the cold truth.
I realized the ring was probably meant to be Ivy’s birthday present and had only been left in the car by accident.
Maybe this dinner with me was nothing more than compensation, while his heart and his promises had belonged to Ivy all along.
Meeting his gentle gaze made my stomach twist, and a surge of revulsion left me shaking. This was what I had longed for over the past three years, yet now all I felt was disgust.
Right then, the phone lying on the table suddenly began to buzz.
A message from Ivy had come in.
“Lianne, I know Ethan is with you right now. But don’t get too smug. Do you really think he loves you?”
A second message followed, brazen and taunting. “Want to make a bet? All I have to do is call him, and he’ll leave you behind and come running back to me. Do you believe that?”
My heart sank, and the memories of Ethan leaving me again and again for Ivy rushed back all at once, pressing down on my chest like a weight.
I already knew Ethan would choose Ivy without hesitation, so I deleted the messages and had no intention of answering her.
“I’m going to the restroom for a moment,” Ethan said quietly, his fingers lightly sweeping across the back of my hand.
