Chapter 49:
He then made a suggestion. “The bidding is about to get underway. Why don’t you grab a seat by me? It’ll keep you away from anyone you’re trying to dodge.”
Suddenly, a chilly and sharp aroma of sandalwood surrounded me before I could even open my mouth.
“Lianne.” Ethan stepped into view with a look that was deathly serious, his eyes burning with a rage that I just didn’t understand. He didn’t even acknowledge Frank’s presence. “You’re sitting with me,” he commanded, making it clear this wasn’t a request.
I glanced over at Frank as a reflex, but he just gave me a shrug.
Following behind Ethan, I walked toward the front row. Those seats were saved strictly for the Alpha of the Thorn Pack as a sign of his total power.
“Ethan! Over this way!” Ivy’s high-pitched voice called out before we even made it to the chairs. She was perched right in the middle of the front row, waving him over with a huge smile.
Without a second thought, Ethan marched over and claimed the open spot right beside Ivy.
I just stood there like a statue.
I had assumed that when he told me to come along, he actually wanted me next to him.

Now it was plain as day that I was just a footnote. He had only dragged me along to make it look like he was being the bigger person.
I had actually been foolish enough to believe that he might allow me to keep a tiny bit of my pride in a public place like this.
“Lianne, take a seat,” Ethan said as he glanced back at me. His voice sounded completely steady, as though there was absolutely nothing wrong with the situation.
I swallowed the sharp ache in my throat and moved toward them, sitting down on his empty side.
The three of us sat in a row. Ethan occupied the center chair, flanked by his true love and his fated mate.
It was a cruel and mocking sight.
“I wasn’t prepared to run into Ivy tonight,” I remarked. My gaze stayed locked on the items up for bid while my tone remained like ice.
Just then, Ivy spoke in a voice so quiet it was barely audible. “I really am sorry, Lianne. I had no idea you were coming. I wouldn’t have sat here if I’d known. Ethan, do you think it would be better if I went to find a spot in the back row?”
Lianne’s POV:
Ivy made a show of rising and edging toward the back, her face arranged into that sickening look of wounded innocence. “Ethan, I’d better leave. I don’t want Lianne to feel uncomfortable.”
Before I could even open my mouth, Ethan had already caught her by the wrist, the gesture effortless, as though he were steadying something priceless.
“Sit.” His voice was low and absolute, leaving no room for objection. Then he looked at me, his tone flat and detached. “She won’t mind. She’s always been understanding.”
My hands, resting over my knees, tightened sharply around the fabric of my dress, my nails biting hard into my palms.
I wouldn’t mind?
