Chapter 507:
She was exactly the kind of woman who could stand beside an Alpha no matter the circumstances.
Before I knew it, my thoughts began to drift.
If Ethan had fallen for her, wouldn’t everything be much easier?
If Melisa were his Luna, the Thorn Pack elders would surely rejoice and celebrate throughout the entire pack. She and Ethan could openly hold each other beneath the sacred moonlight, surrounded by the blessings of everyone. Unlike me, who could only remain by Ethan’s side through a deal, trading my children’s custody for a fragile, temporary chance to stay near him.
“Ms. Riley, is something on your mind? I called you twice, and you didn’t respond.” Melisa’s voice pulled me out of the whirlpool of self-doubt.
Startled, I quickly forced a smile. “Nothing. I was just thinking about what I should make for Ethan later.”
Trying to conceal my discomfort, I immediately shifted the conversation. “How is his recovery going? Everything looked fine during the examination, right?”
Melisa let out a sigh, sounding slightly helpless. “His recovery is progressing well. The Alpha’s healing ability is exceptional. But he’s far too active. If he keeps moving around so much, the wound could easily reopen. You really need to watch him closely. Don’t let him keep pushing himself.”
I knew exactly why he had been so active, and warmth instantly crept into my cheeks.
“I will… I’ll keep an eye on him,” I replied softly, lowering my head.

After Melisa packed away her medical kit and left, the room fell silent again.
I was just about to open Ethan’s laptop and continue working on the unfinished contracts when I suddenly felt an intense gaze resting on me.
When I looked up, I found Ethan staring directly at me, his eyes seeming capable of peering straight into my heart.
“Were you jealous when you were standing at the door earlier?” He got straight to the point, a trace of amusement lingering in his voice.
“I wasn’t!” The denial slipped out immediately. I hurriedly opened the laptop. “Don’t be ridiculous. I was thinking about the contracts. Where were we? Let’s continue…”
“Lianne.” He cut me off. His long fingers tapped lightly against the edge of the bed as his expression grew more serious. “If you don’t like Melisa being around me, I can replace her immediately.”
I froze before quickly shaking my head. “Have you lost your mind? Melisa is incredibly skilled, and she saved your life when you were in danger. I have absolutely no reason to complain about her, much less ask you to replace her.”
I lowered my eyes, hiding the emotions swirling inside them.
I envied Melisa’s confidence and her background.
And deep down, I always felt like someone who didn’t belong here, someone unworthy of standing beside Ethan.
“She’s only doing her job. To me, she’s no different from the medical equipment in this room.” Ethan spoke bluntly, as though he had seen through every thought in my mind. His detached tone was so cold it almost sounded heartless.
