Chapter 161
[ 528 words ]
Chapter 161:
“My word?” I let out a laugh, as though he had said something utterly absurd, my eyes burning with tears. “When you chose Ivy without the slightest hesitation, did you ever think about the promise you made to me? Or about the duties you were supposed to fulfill as a husband?”
I moved closer and jabbed a finger hard against his chest. “You betrayed me. That’s the truth. The ring in the car was for Ivy. That’s the truth too. Even if none of that setup had happened, you still would have gone to her, wouldn’t you?”
My voice shook a little, and every word came out edged with bitterness. “Today, you gave her a lavish birthday celebration. You played piano for her. You took the first dance with her. In all three years we’ve been married, you never once gave me anything like that. Ethan, you’re not going to fool me.”
He parted his lips, ready to argue, but I cut him off first, my voice sharp with emotion. “Did you really think I didn’t know? All those nights when you left and didn’t come home until daybreak, I stayed awake through every one of them. I heard you come back. I lay next to you, breathing in Ivy’s scent on your body. I said nothing because I wanted to preserve the last scrap of my dignity!”
Lianne’s POV:
I looked at Ethan, my heart sunk in despair, every trace of light gone from my eyes. “The person you’ve always loved is Ivy. What existed between us was nothing but a cruel joke from the Moon Goddess. One day or another, we were always going to end for good.”
I turned to go, but Ethan suddenly lost control. He seized my shoulders and slammed me back against the car door.
“That’s not true, Lianne!” His hands shook as they cradled my face, making me meet his eyes.
“I thought I loved her, but recently, whenever I close my eyes, I see you. When I open them, it’s still you. Even in my dreams, all I see is you crying as you walk away from me.”
He stared at me and said each word with deliberate clarity. “Lianne, I think I may really have fallen in love with you.”
It felt as though all the air had been torn out of the world in that moment, leaving only Ethan’s heavy, burning breath against the side of my neck.

I trembled and stared into his eyes in shock.
He said he had fallen in love with me.
Those words hit me like a sharp slap across the face, making my ears buzz and my mind empty out.
I had waited for that for three full years.
Through all those countless days and nights, I had been like a lowly shadow, using everything I had to warm his heart, only to be answered again and again with coldness, violence, and indifference.
And yet it happened now.
Now, when my heart had already completely died, he was telling me he liked me?
Was I supposed to feel happy?
No, all I felt was how ridiculous it was. How revolting it was. It was as though the world had played its cruelest trick on me.
