Chapter 543:
Once only the four of us were left, I leaned closer to Ethan and quietly explained, “I wasn’t trying to specifically target Jeremy. I just… don’t want Tracy to get hurt.”
“I know.” Ethan placed his hand over mine. The warmth of his palm was as steady and comforting as ever. “No matter what choice you make, I’ll support you.”
By the time dinner was over, it was late.
Ethan asked Noah to take the two kids back to the villa so they could rest.
Ruby kept insisting she wanted her old stuffed toy. Ethan stood beside the car, watching the kids leave. Then he turned to me and said, “I’ll stop by Frank’s place and pick things up.”
“I’m coming with you.” I stood beside him and remained firmly where I was.

“You don’t trust me?” Ethan’s voice was calm, but beneath that calm exterior, I could sense a storm brewing.
I knew the reason for his displeasure wasn’t Frank himself. It was because I was worrying about another man.
I took a breath, gathered my courage, and reached for his hand. His fingers were cool against mine as I held on. “I’m worried the two of you will end up fighting,” I admitted honestly. “Ethan, I know Frank. He looks composed and quiet, but he’s proud and stubborn deep down. He has spent all this time taking care of the children, and now they’re gone. Of course he has some resentment bottled up inside. And you’re still recovering from your injuries.”
After a short pause, I added softly, “If both of you really get into a fight, I don’t even want to think about what could happen.”
“Heh.” Ethan let out a cold chuckle. He turned toward me, and in the dim light, his sharp eyes gleamed. “Then tell me, if we really fought, who are you more worried about?”
Without the slightest hesitation, I met his gaze and answered, “You. Ethan, the wound on your chest still hasn’t healed completely. The doctor specifically said you can’t do anything physically demanding. You’re in no shape to fight anyone right now.”
One of Ethan’s brows lifted. The coldness in his eyes eased slightly. “So you think I would lose to him?”
“I’ve never questioned your abilities.” I rolled my eyes, unable to hide my exasperation. Holding his hand a little tighter, I continued, “I’m worried your wound will tear open again. If that happens, I’ll be devastated. Is that answer satisfactory enough for you?”
The moment Ethan heard this, his demeanor finally softened.
He turned his hand and clasped mine tightly. His grip was so strong it hurt. “You mean that?” he muttered.
“I do.” I let out a quiet sigh, slipped my arm through his, and rested lightly against him. “That’s exactly why I need to go with you. I can’t keep avoiding this forever. I owe Frank a proper thank-you, and… I need to convince him to let go and start living for himself.”
Ethan watched me in silence for a long while. His eyes searched mine carefully, as though he were trying to determine whether I had any lingering feelings for Frank.
