Chapter 785:
He was quiet for a while, then answered with a hint of grievance, “Of course I have. Every time you pushed me away, I told myself I should stop caring about someone who treated me so coldly. But the moment I saw you in pain… every promise I’d made to myself turned to dust.”
I was still staring at the video when a notification suddenly appeared at the top of the screen.
It was a message from Melisa. Did you call me earlier? Is your wound hurting again?
My heartbeat faltered, and my fingers froze above the screen.
So while I was unconscious, he had reached out to her. I knew there was nothing unusual about it. She was his doctor, and after everything he’d been through, it made perfect sense for him to seek medical advice. I understood that better than anyone. Even so, the moment her name popped up on the screen, my heart grew indescribably heavy, a dull ache settling deep inside it.
I took a deep breath, forcing down the emotions rising inside me, and handed the phone back to him.
“You have a message,” I said calmly, avoiding his eyes, my voice noticeably colder. “Tell the doctor to remove the IV. I want to go home.”
The moment we stepped outside the hospital, the dark clouds that had hung overhead all day finally let loose. Rain poured down in torrents, pounding relentlessly on the car windows.
I rested my head against the cold glass and watched the neon lights outside melt into blurred ribbons of color. Throughout the drive, I didn’t say a word.
The car was silent. At some point, I heard Ethan tapping on his phone screen.

Because of the injury on the right side of his chest, he couldn’t move his right arm properly and had no choice but to type with his left hand.
Out of the corner of my eye, I watched him struggle with the keyboard, his fingers pressing the wrong keys again and again. His brows stayed tightly knitted together, yet he stubbornly refused to stop, determined to finish whatever he was doing.
Lianne’s POV
When we returned to the apartment, I watched Ethan casually slip off his jacket and hang it by the entrance. He didn’t look like he had any plans to leave. I could no longer hold back my question.
“Aren’t you going back to the Voss estate?”
“I’ll sleep on the sofa,” he answered firmly without even glancing at me. “You haven’t fully recovered yet. I don’t feel at ease leaving you here by yourself.”
“The sofa isn’t comfortable, and your injuries…” Without thinking, I blurted out, “Why don’t you just sleep in the bed?”
The moment I said it, the room fell into an awkward silence.
Ethan lifted his head sharply. His dark eyes flickered with emotions so intense I couldn’t quite read them.
The next moment, he crossed the distance between us in a single stride. One hand cradled the back of my head as he pulled me firmly into his arms, leaving me no chance to protest.
His lips claimed mine, fierce and desperate. The kiss was overwhelming and possessive, as though he were reclaiming something that had always been his.
