Chapter 262

Chapter 262:
I had been wrong from the beginning. I had confused the gratitude and guilt I carried for Ivy with love.
I had selfishly asked Lianne to break our bond, crushing her hopes with my own hands. I had even brought Ivy, that poisonous woman, back into our lives and made Harold worry himself to death over my stupidity.
I was unworthy of being an Alpha, much less a husband or a father.
After what seemed like an endless stretch of time, the light above the emergency room finally changed from red to green.
The director stepped out, his face lined with exhaustion. I hurried toward him and clasped his shoulders hard, my voice so rough it was nearly impossible to hear.

“Doctor, is the baby alright?”
Lianne’s POV
The sting of antiseptic scraped through my lungs like a thousand fine pins every time I breathed.
I pried my eyes open little by little and found myself staring at a stark white ceiling.
For a handful of seconds, my thoughts were nothing but emptiness, until the broken, wretched memories came crashing back over me like a storm tide.
I jerked upright, paying no mind to the IV needle still lodged in my hand, and reached for my stomach.
It was hollow.
That soft, precious bond I had once felt was no longer there.
What remained instead was a bottomless heaviness and a silence so dense it nearly smothered me.
“My baby…” I tried to say it, but no sound managed to leave my throat.
Tears spilled out instantly, sliding past my temples and into my hair.
Nancy was right, I was cursed.
I had caused my father’s death, pushed Harold into the grave, and failed to protect my baby. I was fated to have no one, to wither away in this barren world all by myself.
“Lianne! You’re awake?”
The door flew open, and Ethan came rushing inside.
He looked like complete ruin, his shirt marked with dried blood, his eyes raw and reddened, and something close to madness hung over him.
“How do you feel? Are you hurting anywhere? Doctor, get in here, now!” He rambled senselessly as he reached for me.
“The baby is gone,” I said flatly, my voice dull and dead.
Ethan’s hand stopped in midair, and all the color drained from his face at once.
He sank to his knees beside the bed and clutched my hand hard, his voice rough and so faint it was barely there.
“I’m sorry… Lianne! I never should have locked you in, never should have turned a deaf ear when you begged for help… This is all because of me. You can kill me, strike me, curse me…”
Sorry?
What good was sorry now?
I looked at him and felt no rage at all, only an endless ache and a numbness that swallowed everything.
He was the man I had loved for so many years. Yet again and again, he shoved me over the edge, then stood there acting sorry afterward.
I was worn out. Completely worn out.
