Chapter 596:
Panic surged through me.
I had never feared Ethan before, but this version of him terrified me.
I pushed against his chest, not to escape him, but to avoid hurting the wound that still hadn’t healed.
Yet his hold on me was unbreakable, crushingly strong, tight enough to make my bones ache.
Lianne’s POV
Air barely reached my lungs, but I forced myself to react. I sank my teeth into Ethan’s mouth with all the strength I had, splitting his lip open.
The metallic tang flooded between us immediately.
His entire body stiffened. At last, awareness flickered back into his gaze.
As though waking from some nightmare trance, he shoved himself away from me without offering a single explanation. He turned sharply and disappeared into the hospital bathroom.
A violent crash echoed as the door slammed behind him.
I slid down against the wall, dragging in shaky breaths while the taste of his blood lingered across my mouth.

Ignoring it completely, I staggered toward the bathroom and beat my fists against the door.
“Ethan! Open this door! What are you doing in there?”
The blurred glass revealed no steam whatsoever. Dread curled through my stomach. He was using freezing water.
His chest injury had barely begun healing, and the infection in his lungs still hadn’t cleared. Subjecting himself to icy water in that condition could destroy him.
“Ethan, have you lost your mind? Open up!”
Nothing answered me except the relentless rush of water.
Fear mixed with fury until my composure finally snapped apart. I seized a heavy wooden chair nearby and raised it, ready to shatter the glass.
“Stop.” His voice reached me at last. Weak. Shivering. Almost begging. “Lianne… please. Just ten minutes. Let me stay alone for ten minutes.”
My grip faltered instantly, the chair frozen above my head.
Something painfully helpless in his tone tore through my anger.
In the end, I relented.
After lowering the chair, I rushed from the room and went straight to Melisa’s office. I grabbed the strongest anti-inflammatory medication available. Every instinct screamed that something inside him had broken far beyond the physical wounds.
I watched the clock mercilessly. The moment those ten minutes passed, I pushed the bathroom door open.
The shower had gone silent.
Ethan stood motionless beneath the dim light, soaked completely. Wet strands of hair clung to his forehead while water traced slow paths down his colorless face.
He looked hollow, fragile enough to crumble.
I said nothing.
Taking a towel and fresh robe, I walked toward him and began peeling the drenched clothes from his body despite his silence.
His skin felt painfully cold beneath my hands. When my fingers brushed the uneven scar crossing his chest, a tiny shudder passed through him, though he never pulled away.
Carefully, I dried him and slipped the robe over his shoulders.
