Chapter 936:
I held her hand tightly, my eyes still swollen and red. “Tracy, whatever you find out, please don’t keep it from me. Tell me everything, no matter what it is. Promise me.”
She met my gaze and gave a firm nod. “I promise.”
Even after Tracy left, my thoughts remained chaotic. I paced restlessly around the living room as Tracy’s words echoed in my head. “I suspect Ethan has been dealing with a strange illness that no one seems able to diagnose, and Melisa may be the only person who can cure him.”
I struggled with myself for a long time. In the end, I grabbed my phone and called Melisa.
She answered almost at once.
Her voice came through the phone, sounding strangely composed. “Miss Riley, what a coincidence. I was just about to call you myself.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What is it you want to discuss with me?” I asked.
“It’s not something I can explain properly over the phone.” Her voice remained calm and slow. “Let’s meet in person. There are a few things I think you have a right to know.”

I hailed a cab and headed to the restaurant where Melisa had arranged to meet me.
The restaurant was an elegant establishment in the heart of the city. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see the busy streets outside, while the afternoon sun poured through the glass and bathed the white tablecloths in a soft, warm light.
I picked a table by the window and sat there, nervously waiting for her to arrive.
Tracy’s theory kept running through my mind, and more than anything, I needed to hear the truth about Ethan’s condition from Melisa herself.
Ten minutes later, Melisa finally arrived.
She wore an ivory-colored dress, and a mild, pleasant smile rested on her face. She looked nothing like the sharp and aggressive woman I had encountered in the hospital hallway the last time we met.
She settled into the seat opposite me, placed her handbag on the chair beside her, and greeted me in a soft voice. “Miss Riley, I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”
I had no interest in exchanging pleasantries, so I immediately asked, “You said over the phone that there was something you wanted to tell me. What is it?”
A faint smile touched her lips as she lifted her glass, took a small sip of water, and placed it back on the table. Her eyes remained fixed on me, a subtle hint of appraisal in her gaze. “I knew you wouldn’t agree to meet me without a reason. You’re here because of Ethan, aren’t you?”
I didn’t bother denying it. She leaned back comfortably, her tone relaxed. “There’s no point hiding anything from you. What I wanted to tell you is that Ethan and I will soon be completing our mate bond.”
I pushed down the bitterness rising inside me and got straight to the matter that actually concerned me. “That’s not why I came. I want to know about his illness. Tell me what’s happening to him. Why hasn’t anyone been able to determine what’s causing it?”
