Chapter 878:
“Lianne, have you ever considered that your own obsession is what brought this on? Your relentless chase for justice over your father’s death only worsened Rola’s condition, and it led to her death. Now that she’s gone, Ethan is drowning in grief. It’s only natural that he resents you.”
I was struck mute.
But seeking the truth about my father’s death was never wrong. I only ever wanted to give him the justice he deserved. I never meant to destroy anyone.
My grip tightened on the phone. “I just wanted the truth.”

Melisa’s voice took on a mocking edge. “The truth? You mean the truth that cost Rola her life? Do you honestly believe Ethan can live with that? He put up with you while Rola was still breathing. Now that she’s gone, it’s only natural he’d turn away.”
I clenched my jaw, my voice coming out hoarse. “Even if we become strangers, you’ll never take my place.”
Melisa paused for a beat, then answered with calm indifference, “Don’t worry. I have no interest in being anyone’s replacement.”
And then she hung up.
I sat there in the dark, phone still pressed to my ear, my mind spiraling into chaos.
Wave after wave of self-doubt crashed over me.
Had I really done something wrong? Was my stubbornness the root of all this? Had I single-handedly destroyed everything between Ethan and me?
I squeezed my eyes shut and drew a shaky breath.
No. I refused to believe that all his devotion had been a lie. Ethan was simply lost in his grief right now.
He needed time to heal. I had to hold on. I had to trust him.
Ethan’s POV:
It was already two in the morning when I pulled up outside the villa, yet I couldn’t bring myself to switch off the engine.
My fingers stayed wrapped tightly around the steering wheel as my eyes lingered on the living room window, where a warm light still shone through the glass.
I didn’t know if Lianne was still awake, and I didn’t have the courage to walk in.
Earlier that night, Ruby had called me. Her sweet, innocent voice told me she missed me, then she quietly added that Lianne missed me too. For a fleeting moment, I wanted to abandon everything and come straight home.
In the end, I stopped myself.
I couldn’t let all the effort I had put into pushing Lianne away go to waste. I had come this far, and I couldn’t allow everything to fall apart now.
Time crawled by as I remained in the car. Only after the light in the living room finally went out did I turn off the engine, get out, and quietly open the door.
After changing my shoes, I stepped inside and immediately noticed Lianne asleep on the sofa.
She was curled onto her side with nothing but a thin blanket covering her. Even in her sleep, her brows remained lightly knitted together, as though she couldn’t find peace.
It was obvious she had been sleeping there for days.
My heart ached.
