Chapter 138:
“I’m not feeling well. I stayed in there for a while to pull myself together.” I lied, instinctively avoiding his gaze.
Ivy, who was sitting nearby, immediately noticed that something was wrong.
Her eyeliner-framed eyes swept across my face before coming to rest on my swollen lips, and a frosty smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
“Lianne, what happened to your lips?” She purposely spoke louder, drawing the attention of several assistant directors nearby.
I stiffened, but kept my face composed. “The mosquitoes here are terrible. I got bitten.”
“Is that so? These mosquitoes really do know where to bite.” Ivy kept making snide remarks, but fortunately, one of the assistant directors tactfully steered the conversation toward the next day’s filming schedule.
Soon after, Ethan came back as well.
He looked calm and only gave a casual explanation. “I ran into someone I knew and got delayed.”
Compared to mine, his excuse sounded more convincing, and somehow even more ridiculous.

Seeing how polished and composed he looked, I could only curl my lips in bitter self-ridicule.
After dinner, Ivy stayed glued to Ethan’s side, slipping her arm through his and speaking in a soft, clinging tone. “Ethan, my birthday is next week. You said you’d throw me a proper party. Have you picked the venue yet?”
To my surprise, Ethan did not agree.
“I already have plans that day.” His voice was low and carried a force that could not be challenged. “Your birthday celebration can be held another day.”
I lifted my head sharply and met his burning gaze.
Could those plans be because of me?
The thought had only just appeared when I immediately smothered it.
I could not afford to fool myself. It would only make the pain cut deeper.
Ivy’s expression changed at once, yet she still refused to drop it. “What could possibly be more important than my birthday, Ethan?”
“Stop being unreasonable,” he said in a clipped, firm voice, shutting Ivy down on the spot.
The drive home passed in silence.
Ethan sat behind the wheel, his long fingers occasionally drumming a flat rhythm against it.
“We’ve been together for three years, but it looks like we’ve never once celebrated our anniversary,” he said out of nowhere, breaking the silence. “Next Monday, I want to make it up to you.”
I kept my eyes on the neon lights flashing past outside the window, and my heart did not stir at all.
Make it up to me? There was something profoundly ironic about talking about making amends when our mate bond was about to end.
But I did not say no.
Maybe it was that tiny, pitiful desire for revenge buried deep inside me. I wanted to see Ivy’s face when she found out Ethan would be staying with me on her birthday.
Even if we were about to part ways, I still did not want things to go smoothly for Ivy.
Soon, Ivy’s birthday arrived.
At five that afternoon, Ethan sent me a message. “Wait for me in the garage after work. I’m taking you to dinner.”
