Chapter 211:
“This isn’t the time for that.” Ethan lowered his hand, his face hardening once more. “For my grandpa’s sake, you need to continue acting as my mate. Until he recovers completely, or… until I come up with a better solution.”
He turned away from me, showing me only his back. “Grandpa needs peace of mind. Once his condition is stable, I’ll tell you.”
I wanted nothing more to do with Ethan and turned to walk away.
I had barely taken two steps when Ivy’s voice rang out behind me. “Lianne!”
I closed my eyes for a brief second, drew in a breath, and forced my irritation back down.

I had nearly forgotten. Ivy was still here in the hospital, still playing the role of the fragile victim.
When I turned, I saw Ivy making her way unsteadily toward Ethan.
Her face was ghostly pale, and her steps wavered as though she could collapse at any second.
As expected, the instant she reached him, her body gave way and she fell straight into his arms.
Ethan caught her by the waist on instinct, his brows tightening, but he made no move to push her away.
“Ethan… I heard your grandfather wasn’t well. I was so worried.” Ivy’s fingers clung to his suit, her eyes reddened with tears, her voice thick and trembling. “Will you let me go in and see him? I want to apologize to him myself and make sure he’s alright.”
“No.” I refused, my tone cold and unyielding. “He needs quiet right now. He cannot be disturbed.”
Ivy flinched as tears spilled down her face, the picture of grievance and hurt. “Lianne, I know you hate me, but I really do care about Harold. Why are you treating me like this? Can’t I even visit him?”
Lianne’s POV
Ivy wept as she kept sneaking glances at Ethan from the corner of her eye, every bit of her wounded-victim performance polished to perfection.
I had fully expected Ethan to rebuke me again for her sake, just as he always did, but to my surprise, he said, “Ivy, do as Lianne says. With my grandfather in this condition, this isn’t the right time for you to go in.”
Ivy’s tears stopped short, and she stared at Ethan in open disbelief.
She clearly had not expected the man who usually indulged her to reject her now.
Biting down on her lip, she turned her words toward me with pointed implication. “Lianne, did you say something to Harold that upset him?”
The sight of her pitiful little act made nausea rise in my throat.
I didn’t even have the energy to argue with her anymore. Turning to Ethan, I let out a faint, mocking smile. “Since Ivy is so talented at weaving stories, then stay here and listen to them. I don’t have the time to keep playing a role in this little performance of yours.”
I turned to leave, only to walk straight into a warm, steady embrace.
“Rola?” I froze in surprise.
Rola had appeared in the hallway without my noticing.
The sheer authority she carried was enough to make the air feel heavy.
Her eyes swept over my swollen eyelids, and her expression sharpened at once.
