Chapter 712:
“That’s right.” He tightened his arms, pulling me even closer to him. “You’re the greatest surprise my life has ever given me. After I met you, I stopped being the person I’d always been. Those rules, the inheritance, the family’s honor, none of them mattered as much as you did. While we were apart, I tried to go back to being the old Ethan again, but I couldn’t. I realized I no longer cared about anyone else. All I could think about was you.”
His words reminded me of the time he had said he regretted meeting me, and I felt a dull ache in my heart.
“Is that why you once said you regretted meeting me?” I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper.
“You silly girl.” He kissed my forehead, his voice filled with tenderness. “I never regretted falling in love with you. I regretted barging into your life and turning it upside down. With your talent, if we had never met, you could have built a successful career and lived a peaceful, happy life. Instead, you’re trapped in this endless conflict, surrounded by hatred with no easy way out.”
I tightened my grip on his hand, threading my fingers through his until our hands fit perfectly together. “We can’t rewrite the past, Ethan. The only thing we can do is keep moving forward.”
Taking advantage of the intimate atmosphere, I drew a slow breath and carefully chose my words. “So stop wearing yourself out over my father’s case. You’ve done so many things for me already. You shouldn’t throw away everything for someone like me, someone bent on taking revenge. Let me go, Ethan. Return to the life that was meant for you.”
The atmosphere turned cold in an instant.
The warmth disappeared from Ethan’s eyes, replaced by a cold, suffocating pressure.

He pushed himself up and looked straight into my eyes. His voice sounded chilling as he said, “Lianne, what are you really trying to tell me? What have you decided to do? Tell me.”
He was far too perceptive. His stare sent a wave of panic rushing through my heart.
I didn’t want to ruin such a peaceful night by talking about my father’s case. More than that, I didn’t want him to see the determination in my eyes.
I turned onto my side, closed my eyes, and pretended to be exhausted, deliberately changing the subject. “I’m really sleepy. Aren’t we taking the kids to the coastal boardwalk tomorrow? We should get some rest.”
I used tomorrow’s plans as an excuse, even as my heart pounded wildly in my chest.
Behind me, I could still feel his searching gaze fixed on my back.
After a long silence, he simply let out a soft sigh. Then he lay back down and pulled me tightly into his arms from behind.
“Go to sleep,” he whispered gently, but beneath those soft words was a quiet resolve that made my heart ache.
I knew he had seen through my attempt to avoid the subject. And I also knew he had no intention of letting me go.
Lianne’s POV:
The following morning, Ethan and I got up early and went for another walk through Brinewick.
The first light of day spread across the small coastal town, while the gentle ocean breeze carried the familiar scent of salt through the air.
With Ruby and Silas beside us, we made our way back to the crossroads where Ethan and I had met.
