Chapter 893:
But I couldn’t gamble on even the smallest possibility of failure. Right now, Melisa controlled everything. I was backed into a corner.
As countless possibilities ran through my mind, a plan gradually took shape.
“Jeremy,” I said. “I need Melisa to poison me.”
The line went silent for a long while.
After some time, Jeremy exploded, “What did you just say? Ethan, have you lost your mind? Do you even hear yourself?”
“I know exactly what I’m saying.” My tone never wavered. “If I need to risk my life to keep Lianne safe, then I’ll do it. I’ll take every danger onto myself, even if it costs me my life.”
“You’re insane!” Jeremy practically yelled. “Ethan, think about this! Lianne would never accept it! If she ever learns the truth, she’ll hate you for hiding it from her, and she’ll never forgive herself either!”
“Then make sure she never finds out.” My voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. “Jeremy, listen carefully. She can never know. This is my burden to bear. She has already sacrificed more than enough for me. She has endured so much pain and so many injustices because of me. From this moment on, every bit of suffering, every risk, is mine alone to bear.”
The line went silent once more.
I could hear Jeremy breathing heavily as he struggled to calm himself.
After what felt like forever, he finally let out a weary sigh. His voice was filled with helplessness. “You’re gambling with your life, Ethan. Do you understand that the poisons Melisa possesses are so lethal that even the pack’s healers may not be able to save you? You’re literally exchanging your life for Lianne’s.”

“I know,” I whispered and looked up at the gloomy sky. “But if it’s for her, it’s worth it.”
Jeremy didn’t let it go. “What about the children? Have you thought about what will happen to Ruby and Silas if something happens to you?”
My grip on the steering wheel shook slightly.
The children.
Ruby’s sweet little voice calling me “Daddy.” Silas quietly leaning on me while reading. Those vivid, precious memories left my heart aching. I closed my eyes. My throat felt so tight that it took a while before I could speak again.
“That’s why…” My voice was barely above a whisper. “I can’t afford to fail.”
In the end, Jeremy only said, “I understand. Take care of yourself.”
After the call ended, I pulled the car over to the side of the road. I tossed my phone onto the passenger seat, leaned back, and closed my eyes.
Lianne’s face filled my thoughts. The way her eyes curved into crescents whenever she smiled, the way she stubbornly pressed her lips together when she was upset, and last night, the way she rested her head on my lap, cheeks flushed, promising softly to learn to be gentler.
Then my thoughts drifted to Ruby and Silas.
I could feel Ruby’s tiny arms wrapped tightly around me. I could picture Silas quietly sitting beside me, his silent company bringing me peace.
I slowly opened my eyes and started the engine.
For them, there was nothing I wouldn’t do, even if it meant giving up my life.
