Chapter 640:
“Told you I wasn’t making it up.” Even through text, his smugness was obvious.
Heat crept into my cheeks as I muttered an insult under my breath, though the knot in my chest loosened slightly.
Then it hit me. They had only recently gotten back together, and Jeremy was clearly clinging to her possessively. Irritating as it was, the behavior suited him far too well.
“Fine. Stop bragging already. Just make sure she’s okay, and remind her to return Frank’s calls. He’s been worried sick,” I replied.
Not long after, Tracy finally sent a voice message herself. Her voice sounded rough, but her mood seemed unusually bright. “Lianne, I’m fine. Deal with your own problems first. Don’t stress over me.”
The cheerful tone lifted a weight off my shoulders.
Once my nerves settled, I opened my laptop and started sorting through unfinished work.
Back when I joined Voss Group to investigate my father’s case, I had agreed to an executive-level employment contract. Resigning required a mandatory six-month notice period.

Now the company’s silver insignia stared back at me from the screen like a block of ice. After a slow breath, I opened a blank document and drafted my resignation letter.
Over the coming months, I planned to organize my projects properly and hand off every responsibility in order.
The moment the lawsuit went public, I needed to cut myself off from the Voss family entirely — not only to escape endless speculation, but also to protect whatever dignity I had left.
I had only just submitted the letter to Human Resources when Noah texted me. “Miss Riley, are you seriously leaving? Breaking that agreement comes with a massive penalty. Alpha is in a senior leadership meeting right now. If you change your mind, I’ll pretend I never received it.”
My grip tightened on the mouse as I replied, “Thank you, Noah. But this decision is final.”
Once the message was sent, my attention lingered on the muted conference icon on the screen. An impulse suddenly surfaced. I wanted to see Ethan.
Even if it was only through a livestream, I needed to know what the man who had pushed me away was doing now.
I clicked the first meeting room link, and a password window popped up.
Without thinking, I typed in my birth date.
Access granted.
My breath caught for a moment as shock rippled through me.
He had really used my birthday?
Before I could process that, another alert flashed across the top of the screen. “User ‘Lianne’ has entered Conference Room One.”
Cold panic flooded through me instantly. The company’s executive system tracked every login in real time for security purposes.
I tried to leave right away, but another message blocked me. “For security reasons, guests cannot exit within five minutes of entering.”
I nearly died of embarrassment on the spot. There was nothing I could do except sit there awkwardly while every participant became fully aware of my presence.
Conference Room One sat at the heart of Voss Group’s operations.
