Chapter 915:
Ethan’s POV:
On Sunday afternoon, I showed up at the restaurant at the agreed time.
I had chosen the place myself, reserving a table tucked beside the window where I could see most of the street outside.
I arrived ten minutes ahead of schedule and settled into my seat, casually surveying the room. Nothing appeared out of place. A few curious patrons glanced in my direction, but I paid them no attention. My thoughts were entirely occupied with the reason I had come.

Philip had arranged this gathering, so I assumed I would be meeting with several of the pack’s elders. Some of them had recently become increasingly reckless over territorial disputes, and I had expected this conversation to give me the chance to remind them exactly where the boundaries stood.
Yet, the moment the woman across from me lowered herself into the chair, annoyance settled heavily in my chest.
It was Melisa. She had chosen an off-white dress, paired with carefully applied makeup. Her long hair had been brushed until it lay sleekly against her shoulders.
She offered me a courteous smile that looked far too practiced. “Ethan, are you surprised to see me?”
My first thought was to get up and walk out. Before I could act on it, Melisa hurriedly spoke. There was an unmistakable urgency beneath her composed exterior. “Please don’t leave. I arranged this meeting on purpose because there’s something I need to tell you.”
I settled farther into my chair and regarded her without warmth. I didn’t say a word. She inhaled deeply, seemingly preparing herself for what came next. “Ethan, I’ve witnessed everything that happened between you and Lianne. I saw how much you loved her, and I’ve watched the two of you fall apart. That’s why I want you to hear this from me directly. I want to take her place. I want to become the woman beside you.”
Her declaration stirred nothing inside me. “Have you finished?” I asked flatly.
She went still. A moment later, she seemed to abandon her initial confidence and adopted a softer approach. “I understand that you can’t move on so quickly. That’s okay. I can wait until you’re ready. All I’m asking for is the opportunity to remain beside you.”
I reached for the glass on the table and took a slow drink before returning it to its place. “Lianne and I have gone our separate ways. That’s the truth. But that doesn’t mean you’ll ever have a place beside me.”
I rose from my chair. “Excuse me. I need to use the restroom.”
Without waiting for her response, I walked away at an easy pace. Inside, I turned on the tap and washed my hands with deliberate slowness. I dried them one finger at a time, taking far longer than necessary. I did this on purpose.
I knew this was the opening Melisa had been waiting for.
