Chapter 44:
My temper started to flare right when the door finally budged. Ava Ford, Ivy’s personal assistant, peered through the small opening with dark circles under her eyes.
“She is a total wreck,” she muttered, looking terrified. “She’s locked herself in the bedroom and won’t see anyone. Just coax her and try not to start another fight.”
I gave a quick nod before heading straight for the bedroom. I gave the wood a hard rap. “Ivy, let me in!”
“Get out of here and leave me be!” A high, strained shriek echoed through the door. It was clear from her tone that she had been sobbing for a while.
How could I just leave her alone? I turned the handle and entered.

The room was dark, with heavy curtains blocking out the sunlight.
Ivy huddled on the ledge in a flimsy slip dress with her knees tucked against her chest. Her skin looked pale and sickly in the gloom, making her seem smaller than usual.
“Don’t do anything stupid, please.” I began to walk toward her slowly, hoping to offer some peace.
Turning her gaze toward me, she offered a heartbreaking grin through a veil of tears. “All I ever wanted was a life at your side, Ethan. Why is the Moon Goddess being so cruel to me? Lianne is your fated mate. Where does that leave me? If I can’t have this one thing, I don’t see the reason to keep going.”
“Stop saying such ridiculous things,” I commanded while lunging forward to catch her swaying frame. My pulse raced as I held her steady. “I am cutting ties with Lianne for good. The Rejection is already signed, and I’ll take care of the formalities next Monday. Trust me—I won’t let you down.”
These words seemed to give her a final anchor to hold on to. She collapsed against my chest and began to wail. “The thought of being without you is killing me. I’m so terrified of losing you.”
Ava chose that second to intervene with a grim expression. “Alpha, Ivy is a public figure. If the public finds out about your connection to Lianne, the internet will tear her apart. They’ll label her a mistress and destroy her career. You have to keep her safe.”
“Nobody is going to touch her,” I snapped back.
Without warning, Ivy shoved me back with surprising force.
Her glare fixed on my throat as her disbelief curdled into pure rage.
“Keep your hands off me!” she shrieked while jabbing a finger toward my skin. “You were just in bed with someone else. I can smell her all over you!”
A cold chill ran through me as I looked down at my own body.
A pink mark stained the skin where Lianne had lost control earlier. It was a clear brand from our time together at the Voss estate.
I opened my mouth to defend myself, but Ava cut me off by shoving a mobile screen into my face. Her hands shook. “Check the trending news! Something huge is going down.”
